built in many parts of the city The year opened with an upheaval in city government' with the discharge of Walton R’ L Taylor the resignation of Police Chief Maurice Schooff and the discharge of some other city employes However with the appointment of Edward L Carlsen finance director as city manager the city settled down and Ogden recorded a successful year in providing improvements adding to departments and making plans for the future On March 1 Golden Jensen--chief deputy sheriff in Riverside County California became the new in Ogden police-chieIn the last 11 months Chief Jensen has revamped the department moved all the offices and personnel to the ground floor of the Municipal Building added a fleet of new black and white police cars and installed a new records system One of the City Council’s prime projects for 1960 fell by the wayside when plans to sell $370000 in revenue bonds to improve Mt Ogden Park with the first project a nine-ho- le city golf course were blocked by petitions calling for a special election on the matter The' council has not called the election yet and no definite plans h&ve been- - made to include the question on the November ballot PARK IMPROVEMENTS Meanwhile City Manager Carlsen has instructed the street department to grade and do other improvements at the northwest end of the big park on the east bench preparatory to installing tennis courts softball courts basketball facilities and other improvements that can be done under the present budget and using city crews and supplies A citywide improvement plan is projected for 1961 and already Mr Carlsen is building a list of paving curbs and sidewalks to be included in an over-al- l project Ogden taxpayers got one small break late in' the year when the City Council by using sharp pencils and judicious pruning shears reduced the general fund heeds to cut in the allow citizens a one-mi- ll a f A-- ’v ' ments as these occurred: —Two new natural gas fields ’ were discovered one in southwestern Wyoming and the other in eastern Utah —Experimental work began on an underground storage reservoir for natural gas near Coalville Utah - —The company’s capital stock was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the quarterly dividend rate was increased five cents V ? v v 4V - j - § self-contain- 8500-horsepow- pipeline projects were completed thus increasing the delivery capacity of the company’s transmission system —Gas rates for residential and commercial users remained among the lowest m the United States Of these developments perhaps the most interesting is the company’s experimental work on an underground storage reservoir for V natural gas The principle of underground gas storage is quite similar to that of above ground water storage:-Suppliare- stored principles are similar the type of reservoir each requires is different Where water can be stored in 'an open basin gas must be stored in an container air-tig- ht there are other rean underground gas feasible Mountain Fuel Supply believes it Of course air-tig- ht has an underground storage site in a sandstone jn the Chalk Creek area near Coalville which meets these requirements Although further testing of the reservoir must be completed preliminary results are favorable New gas fields discovered during the year were at Jackknife Spring Unit in Sweetwater County and Island Unit in Uintah Wyo County Utah Both discovery wells flowed heavily on test The search for new sources of gas supply! is one of Mountain Fuel’s priority projects This spe- - ed er -- 14-sto- ry locomolength these tives
