BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Seniors' club to elect three directors An election of three new directors for the senior citizens Spike club is scheduled Friday at the community center in Brigham City. Candidates for the three openings on the board are Charles Lofthouse, Elvin Christiansen, Jane Linford, Amelia Plastino and James Nelson. Retiring directors are Romeo Christensen, Claude Barker and Leon Swensen. The election is being held in conjunction with the weekly luncheon for seniors at the local center. Director Hazel Kaiser nine-memb- said all candidates are urged to attend. The nominating committee members were Elvin Christiansen, Verna Speth and Leah Jensen. All members are needed to vote by ballot for this election, the directors said. Menu for the luncheon will be shake-bak- e chicken breasts, baked potatoes, vegetables, dessert, coffee and punch. Cost is 70 cents. Reservations must be made by Thursday noon by calling Also, free transportation is provided by Mish Peter- - sen, volunteer, who will call for those needing rides, Mrs. Kaiser reminded. Gus Bronson, director of the Lava Senior center, will bring 15 seniors as guests to the luncheon. Monday is time for the monthly birthday party, honoring those with September birthdays, with Dallas Stiver as guest speaker doing the honors. A coin is given each honoree, along with singing and good wishes of the group. Miriam Evans accompanys Happy Birthday wishes on the piano. Square Dancing Monday nights are for square dancing and beginners are still being taken into the classes. Now is the opportunity to learn this fascinating dance if you are not attending the dances. The Golden Spike Swingers will also be dancing in their own groups in dances called by Roy and Lucille Westley and Lewis Damon, the director said. Monthly pool tournaments are popular activity with competitors coming from around the country. Winner of the September Champ of the Month trophy is J. Otto Jensen, Pool is played each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Three tables are available in the lower level youth center. Spectators are invited to watch the activity. Volunteer Nurses Needed Volunteer nurses are needed to assist with blood pressure testing each month, to lessen the workload on the county nurses, Mrs. Kaiser said. Anyone interested is invited to check with the director. The buses are loaded for a trip to Jackpot, Nev., leaving the center at 9 a.m. on Oct. 18. Deadline for paying is Oct. 1 If any cancellations are made those with their name in will have the first chance at the reservations. The cost is $9.50 for the complete trip. Check with the director for comfirmation of reservations. The buses are rest-rooequipped Greyhound for your comfort, Mrs. Kaiser explain- For Community Pantry Benefit A Community Pantry benefit dinner slated for Friday, Oct. 8, will not only offer a tasting fair" for local residents, but will also help to feed the communitys hungry by raising funds for the Box Elder Community Pantry. to Dinner will be served from 6 9 p.m. at The Solid Rock to mise ffumidls domnnieir (formerly Protestant Student center), 435 East Seventh South, Brigham City. Many women throughout the community have agreed to share their favorite dishes for this tasting fair, with the recipes to include everything from exotic foreign dishes to old favorites from this country. All proceeds from this fundraising event will be donated to the Community Pantry, which provides emergency food and other services during times of crisis. Tickets will be available at local churches this Sunday. Church Women Started The Community Pantry con- - families in need. Clothing, gasoline, and lodging are also sometimes provided in the case of severe emergencies. The Community Pantry can only give temporary help, with cases of continuing need referred to the proper social agency. Another program for building up foodstuffs for Community Pantry use will be introduced in churches in the community, asking each family in the congregation to bring a can of food on the first Sunday of the month as a donation to the Pantry. cept was introduced by Church Women United several years ago and has been coordinated in combined efforts of Church Women United and the Interagency council. Coupled with higher food prices is the fact that more people are in need of emergency food, and the Community Pantry sometimes finds its cupboard bare.
