Show Brigham City, Utah Thursday, September 30, 1976 BOX 6 ELDER Friday a Ferguson field JOURNAL, -- Sear grid dash flakes loco! spofllighfl t Bearville. Each has recorded success in this initial season. Workman came away respectful of the Bruin bunch last Friday night after watching them lose to ranked Roy, 43-Theyre a quick team with several outstanding individual performers, he reported. The lopsided loss to the Royals didnt diminish his concern about the threat they represent unblemished to the Hivers league record. Continuing to produce consternation, too, are the injuries suffered by three linemen along the Box Elder front wall. Tackles Bob Grunig and Donny Ayotte may see action Friday. They were dressed and running Tuesday but not involved The rest of the world can go cafooey but Friday's focus in Box Elder county will be on Ferguson field where Box Elder and Bear River are scheduled to lock up in another traditional football battle. The 7:30 p.m. duel promises to provide plenty of gridiron histrionics. The two clubs go into the fray with resectable records. The Bears are 1 in Region One and the Bees are 6. That tells some of the story. But the real meat of this football feast is in the rivalry that exists y between the ,two schools. cross-count- Both clubs have first-yea- r Workman at the t Hive helm and Bill Jacobsen in mentors-To- Bscb shoot Saturday in contact drills. Center Ron Secrist definitely is out for the week and possibly for the season. And continuing this week of traditional rivalry, Sky View meets Logan at Romney stadium at Utah State university and Roy travels to Bonneville in limited action this year. On the plus side, the Bears have no other personnel changes on offense, keeping their unit almost intact. . a match that probably will decide the Region One cham- pion. Sky View is expected to get its first league win while Roy, on the strength of Jim McMahon and a good flock of linemen, should stun Bonneville. Worthy Opponent Bear River Coach Bill Jacobsen is approaching the game Friday with an eye on the Bee defense. They try to confuse their opponents. They are a good defensive team very quick. Offensive Lineup That includes Mark Williams at quarterback, Chris Webb at fullback, Darwin Carter at center, Howard Rawlinson at swingback, Nolan Hess and Roger Norr alternating at split end, Tad Morrison at tight end, Shane Cornwall and Gary Anderson at guards and Lupe Barrera and Mike Jones at tackles. The Bear River offense is scoring at a per game clip while the defense is allowing 16.8 points, including a burst by Roy last Friday. That loss may have lingering affects on the Bears, Jacobsen feels. Were down right now. It will take a lot for us to come back and I dont know if we can. Were complacent right now. Weve got a playoff shot clinched and Box Elder is still fighting for a berth, Jacobsen said. arent real big so they use this quickness to make up for size, Jacobsen assessed. This quickness, coupled with an injury to running back Curtis Kidman, will see the Bears throwing more this game, said the coach. Well try to concentrate on our passing. Were a little short Similar Situation on experience in the backfield The situation is similar to last with Kidman hurting with a year when the Bears played a bruised thigh. Well have to be very tight game against Weber, more effective than we have lost big to Roy the week after been in the past, he added. then collapsed at home to the Kidman, who churned out 121 powerful Bees. The duck season opens Saturday noon. Fewer Birds An aerial census on Sept. 25 revealed a decrease in water-fow- l numbers compared to last year. Slightly more than 100,000 ducks, mostly pintail and greenwinged teal, were using the refuge. Waterfowl numbers south of the refuge on the state land were down considerably from last year. Hunters may find a few sick or dead birds as a very mild outbreak of avian botulism has occurred on the refuge and surrounding area. This disease is expected to subside with cooler weather with very limited loss of waterfowl. The cooperation of sportsmen is requested in reporting any large die-of- f of birds to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Utah Division of Natural Re- - For a few who are still pondering, then might consider Locomotive Springs, according to local conservation officer 11 John I. Fricke. Fricke said Locomotive traditionally has very few hunters compared with other areas and the number of ducks there seems to be pretty good. The management area there lies to the south and west of the ponds. It is expected to draw less than 100 hunters, he added. The duck opener always draws in excess of 100,000 hunters and the bluebird weather and plentiful duck supply should bring out at least that many this year. The duck outlook in northern Utah looks good, Fricke said. Good Numbers Fricke said Box Elder county especially looks good with Pub- lic Shooting grounds, Salt Creek and Locomotive Springs area holding good numbers of teal, mallards and pintails. Ogden Bay, Harold Crane and Howard Slough also have good populations of ducks. The Bear River bird refuge west of Brigham City is also expected to produce many limits of ducks. Fricke said the majority of the 100,000 hunters expected probably will be concentrated in the marshes from Davis county north. He expects to average between one and three ducks if conditions are right. That means, he said, that hunters must observe the noon shooting rule. ' All it will take is one careless shot to spoil the hunt for the majority of hunters. A few may shoot early and get the birds moving, and the rest who observe the opening time wont get much shooting because the birds will have moved out, stated Fricke. standings w I. Much support has come from the Box Elder High Soccer club which was formed by about 20 students who want to organize a team at the school. The city recreation department has tried to get some games for the high school group but with little success. Other high school age programs have been scheduled previous to ours. However, the boys feel they can keep their hopes alive for soccer locally by helping in the young age group program, the recreation chief said. In talking with many of the parents of children involved in the new program, we find they are quite pleased to be able to enroll their boys and girls. Response has been that the children love the opportunity to play soccer and are enjoying their young coaches, Winn concluded.
