(They tried to make cookies and almost burnt the house down when they forgot to take the last batch out.) by ArleiMftehiea Last Saturday morning husband said he had tidkets to the ballet in Ogden and would I like to get cultured" and just have a night out. When I recovered from my surprise, (if it had been a ball game of some kind I wouldnt have been a bit surprised) I got the kids busy with their chores. By 2 p.m. the house looked beautiful and everyone felt they deserved a snack. I got the cookies and milk out for everyone and threatened dire consequences if anyone spilled. The only one who really believed me yras the baby and she wiped up her milk with her sleeve. I fed and bathed and got everyone ready for bed before six and then locked myself in ;" No Painting No painting. (I dont need another bathroom mural; the one from last time is still ' visible.) Nosedive off Couch Then the baby nosedived off the couch and of course no one comforts quite like mother so the door was again opened. I decided it was easier to get out before one of the kids really did something drastic. Someday I hope I understand the law of nature that states that my last good pair of nylons must develop step ladders just as Im dressing. Thank goodness long dresses cover a multitude of sins. But Ill bet that no one else at the ballet Will be wearing a pair of stockings with a run in them. . Finally husband and I are both dressed and as we walk out the door I give my final instructions. You may not play with the chemistry set. (We once came home to a house reeking of skunk.) Small Bribe Just because I like you and for a small bribe, I promise to keep the childrens secret recipe for the green sticky mess they call clay a secret from your children. But I stopped thinking about it and concentrated on the beautiful dancers on the stage when we got to the Fine Arts auditorium. During intermission I looked around at all the high society ladies. We had marvelous seats on the main floor and almost in the center. I felt a bit like the old sows ear among the silk purses with no fairy godmother to make the magic change. Then the light went down and the story of that old libertine Don Juan unfolded. Let me say that the man who played the title role was not only a marvelous dancer, but also a superb actor. He looked down right . . wicked! Just as the gentleman was about to make his conquest, I had a blinding flash of insight and I shouted, But we dont have any clay. .
