Before the races were run, the colors were presented by Leon Sorensons club. I know this is being done all over the country this year, but by young kids on horses? It was most effective and as the flags were presented. Darrell Fuller read the history of the American flag.. As was fitting to the occasion, the National anthem was played. Im sure everyone there felt a pride in our country and a renewed faith in our future generation, as I did. Today we want to present a history of official American flags. They represent the past and present. They are carried by Americas future, the youth, in this case youth. 4-- H 4-- H Than Cloth The flag is far more than red, white and blue cloth. It is the symbol of America. I! stands for our people, our land, our way of life and the future of our country. When settlers arrived on these shores, they brought the Engflag of their countries land, France, Spain, Sweden and Holland. In 1707 the Flag No. 1 settlers organized into the 13 the Queen Anne flag. This was the merchant flag of England. The Grand Flag No. 2 Union flag was raised over head- - quarters Jan. 1, 1776. The American Revolution had started the year before, and the Bars of Freedom were white stripes added showing the sep- aration from their mother country. We had two unbelievably fast and accurate hand timers, just in case the camera malfunctioned. Thayne Jones and Stan Reese really had those stop watches warmed up. It was no easy thing to come out in the top four teams. A whole lohgycoid winter of trying different horse combinations, hard work, a good feeding program and patience like you cant believe, are involved in getting a team ready for the day is now celebrated as Flag day. As smoke Flag No. 4 cleared from the British fleet bombardment of Fort McHenry Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key saw that the flag was still flying and it inspried him to write a poem about the flag he saw, which has 15 stripes and 15 stars because of the addition of two new states. The flag he saw was the Star Spangled Banner. This poem became our National Anthem. When more Flag No. 5 states joined the United States, it was found that the flag would be awkward. So on April 14, 1818, Congress passed new law restoring the design to II stripes and provided that a star lie added to the blue field for bach, new state. At this time there were 20 states and so they put 20 stars on the blue field. Our flag today Flag No. 6 has 13 stripes, seven red and white, and fifty stars on a blue field. The stripes represent states bound in one country, our . country. The Winners Here are the winners and the prizes: first place, F. 0. The last two weekend in place, Pocatello Tire (POC) The weather last week favored us with a beautiful, sunny day, but did it have to be so darn cold? Very few people endured it in the stands. I wondered where they found all those clothes to bundle up in. Most everyone watched from their cars. I still dont know how the track judges, Roger Golightly and Norm Kendall lived through two days of it. I would like to see how the starter, Dallas Kent, was dressed to survive two days at the gate. Could be a few hot words and the steaming horses added a little warmth. Our good friend, Scott Izatt was the guest announcer. He has a good thing going. He has an excellent back-u- p man (woman), his charming wife. They friends richer. Dallas Jones team ran away but I understand Dallas wasn't in the drivers seat for that one. The Bastian ft Wilker team, from Cache Valley, fell down on the turn and a horse was injured. Our own Dee Black escaped serious injury when the team he was racing against ran right up over his chariot. Luckly Dee was thrown clear and just hurts a lot all over. Gary Payne, of Bear River association, was thrown out of his chariot. He jumped right up and ran down the track to help catch the horses, and collapsed. He was taken to the hospital with a mild concussion, and came back to have his winning picture taken. I told you these guys were tough. Now, this seems like a lot of accidents, but when you consider there were 92 races involving 368 horses, its a wonder there werent more. plaCf, Gary ftTSena Pgyne, March is the World (Bear River) 1 Fine Raee The Bear River Chariot association is to be complimented on the fine race meet and special thanks to Dallas ft Patty Jones is in order.
