This is not a conclusion derived soley from the 1976 campaign but is a fact born out in previous years. Another thing. Pardon us for sounding provincial, but we resent having the fate of the various candidates sealed by virtue of several eastern primaries before we in the West have anything to say about it. Kind of difficult to get away from presidential politics these days, isnt it? Hie New England and Florida primaries have kept the Republican and Democratic duels squarely in the news spotlight. Columnists and commentators who profess expertise in evaluating such things have milked the situation for all its worth. . Already the campaign has seen some contenders withdraw from the field of battle on the Demo side. And little wonder. There have been so many aspirants that some were bound to be lost in the voting shuffle. y WE AGREE, THE early primaries can be a weeding out process. Some candidates had little foothold to begin with and essentially no promise of gaining more. There is a mjx of liberals, moderates and conservatives. But in the heat of battle and seeking to say what citizens want to hear, its truly tough to tell the players apart without a program. They tend to gravitate so-call- ed v toward the middle. Certainly, citizens should feel dis- cuss their differences. And yet the current controversy in Brigham City over pending adoption of a housing code has produced some. One member of the city council reportedly had one caller label him as an S.O.B. pinko pig. To our way of thinking, thats abusive language. And unnecessary in the local situation. At last weeks regular council meeting, a more mature mood seemed to prevail. An opponent of the code conceded that city officials werent really ogres bent on the destruction of all thats good and noble simply because they might favor the disputed measure. The spokesman, Art Romero, then suggested that perhaps the two sides could come together by rewording certain sections of the code. It had a concilatory effect. Often times it is the threat of major stress that stimulates persons to cower and submit to bondage. The effect of a threat depends upon the courage a person has as well as faith in himself to endure major stresses. A people unacustomed to bearing stress in life become brittle and crack with little real provocation like a plane of glass. The other extreme of not caring or hiring insensitive to feeling anything at all is like living in a tent to avoid having a house fall in on top of us. A proper balance of being sensitive and tender enough to care and tough enough to endure seems to represent the most joyful outlook on life as well as the most sure method of survival. They discovered with some surprise that the sonic boom was actually helpful be relieving static stresses in buildings so that they were less subject to radical collapse from stronger shaking. Also, since we live in an earthquake zone, sooner or later we can expect considerably stronger shaking so maybe the sonic booms really condition buildings to be better prepared for such an event. i Enjoy tho paper Editor: Like all other missionaries we have been transferred.
