Show t At state, county fairs BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, October 2, 1975 7 Blue ribbons common to her by Flo Munson It was a blue ribbon affair! At least it was for Mrs. Arvella Stark of Bothwell at the recently concluded Utah State fair in Salt Lake City. She entered ten articles of handiwork and came home with ten ribbons eight first-plac- e blue ribbons and two second-plac- e red ribbons. Accepting blue ribbons is nothing unusual for Mrs. Stark Ive enwho said smilingly, tered both handiwork and canned goods in county and state fairs for the past 50 years. A vinyl bubble cover makes swim- ming in the winter as comfortable as in the summer. indoor-outdoo- stock mAfiierica. . A Not everyone can enjoy a dip in his own pool-i- n heat or cold Swimming in a private pool can be fun and healthy too in winter as well as in the summertime at the Ronald Mortensens in Elwood. In cold weather a vinyl bubble air filled covering makes I i' i swim- ming ideal! Mortensen is one of the very few in the country who has an outdoor bubble pool which he constructed himself with assistance from John Western and a few other close friends. The pool is 18 X 36 feet and holds 23,000 gallons of water. A private swimming pool has been the dream of Mortensen for many years. He delights in teaching his own children and others the techniques involved in swimming. Was Afraid Linda admits, I was actually afraid of water. Now with Ronalds instruction on the dos and donts I can do lengths without feeling any fatigue. And Im not the least bit frightened, she added. The Mortensen children share His wife, 20-2- 5 their fathers enthusiasm for swimming. Richard, Lance, Eric, Gary all enjoy swimming. Even baby Linda Sue not quite a year old has had a few dips. Mortensen laughingly recalls a joke on himself Once when my son Richard .and I were putting the cover on the swimming pool, I accidently fell in with all of my clothes on! It was rather embarrassing for a swimming instructor. My family had a good laugh about it and kidded me. Neighborhood children and friends feel free to use the pool. I've given so many of my prize winning articles to my children and grandchildren and I leave the blue ribbons Names Items This year I entered five pairs of pillow cases, two sets of dtsh towels, two luncheon cloths and a handerchief. Some of the pillow cases were embroidered, some with cut work on. The luncheon cloths have intricate cutwork and embroidery. The hanky and a wide crocheted edging and the dish towels were appliqued with colorful little sunbonnet girls in the corners. v Only six special awards were given at the state fair this year. Mrs. Stark received two out of the six on crocheted and em- ,' broidered pillowcases. I was the winner of a nationwide sweepstakes on a crocheted centerpiece in 1954, she said proudly. Countless Blue Ribbons At the Box Elder County fair she walks away with countless blue ribbons each year. She was runner-ufor sweepstakes at the annual county fair held in August of this year. Handiwork has always been a favorite pastime of Mrs. Stark. She made her own trousseau 4 v.i p almost 50 years ago and has assisted in making trousseaus for each of her children and grandchildi en. She loves to sew and design her own clothes. Mrs. Stark and her husband, Edward, love to travel and recently returned from an enjoyable vacation in Woodland Hills, Calif. While there they attended the taping of a Lawrence Welk show. During the show the champagne lady, Norma Zimmer, coaxed Mr. Stark to dance with her. This show will be televised on the annual Welk Halloween show Oct. 25. Mrs. Stark had the privilege of dancing with Lawrence Welk two years ago. Still Actively Engaged The Starks have a farm and BLUE RIBBONS is anything but a new experience for Mrs. Arvella Stark of well who has won honors at both county and state fairs. While most of our cars improved for 1976 on the EPA City Highway basis, some 1976 mileage improvements were not as dramatic as this average since their big improvements were made in 1975 models like our MPG cars introduced in June.
