Average Cited The figures show that the average expenditure for residential improvements in Box Elder countys regional area came to about $383 per housing unit, as against $336 the year before. Elsewhere in the United States it was $403 per unit. Those were the averages. In individual cases, the outlay ranged considerably above and below that amount. The reason is that most homeowners go in for major improvements and repairs in one year and then that line for a year or two thereafter. Nationally, the Commerce department reports, a record $21.1 billion went for home improvements in 1974. That was 14 percent more than in the previous year. Construction Improvements Over $12.6 billion of it was spent for construction improvements, such as alteratons, replacements and additions. The other $8.5 billion was for maintenance and general repairs, with nearly half of it going for painting and decorating. The rest went to plumbing, roofing, heating and air conditioning equipment and miscellaneous. Of the $3,489,000 that was spent in Box Elder county in the year, about $2,093,000 was for alterations and additions and approximately $1,396,000 for repairs and maintenance, it is Smoke Jokes Have you noticed that most people who give up smoking substitute something for it? While the recipe of skillet, bacon drippings and com meal is certainly worthy of anyones interest, it never hurts to create other equally tasty fish dishes. One such gourmet treat that is favored by Mercury outboards fishing experts is panflsh chowder. Its easy to make, and calls for fish that can be caught in almost any part of the country. Crappie, sunfish, perch and other equally abundant fish are the main ingredients. Heres how to make panfish chowder. Place six to eight pounds of cleaned fish in a pot and cover with cold water. To this add: 1 stalk minced celery 2 chopped onions 1 bayleaf 2 teaspoons salt 4 cracked peppercorns Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer five minutes. Strain broth into a saucepan, add three potatoes (peeled and sliced) and bring to a boil. While potatoes cook, remove skin from fish and flake the flesh from the bones. Dice two slices of fat bacon; saute until crisp. When potatoes become tender add the bacon, fish, 2'A cups milk, and one cup evaporated milk (or heavv cream). Include the fat from the skillet in which bacon was fried. When the pot is simmering again, remove from heat and serve chowder with crackers. The Mrrcury staff suggests that this recipe is enough to serve six to eight persons. . . .
