Two such clowns are Herb and Dean Steed, formerly of Plymouth, who did a terrific job at the National High School Rodeo finals held in Ogden, Aug. 13-1- Bear River Grads are both graduates of Bear River High school and were active in the high school rodeo club for two years. In 1962 Dean qualified in bull riding and attended the National High School rodeo in Valentine, Neb., where he competed in bull riding and bare back riding. In 1963 he was named the champion bull rider in Utah which qualified him to go on the National finals in Tarklo, Mo. He was with the Vern Oyler Amateur rodeo afterwhich he fought bulls in Fairfield and McCammon, Idaho. In the meantime Herb had been serving in the U.S. Navy for four years, spending time overseas in Japan and the Philippines. These brothers Joined Brother Upon returning to the states, Herb joined Dean in Mackey, Idaho. I fought a bull called Snake and for a time I wasnt really convinced I wanted to make a career of bull fighting, Herb said smilingly. However, later we became a profesional team starting our career in 1968, contracted by Young and Young Rodeo Co. at Oakley, Idaho. "We participate in approximately 40 performances annually," Herb explained, "however this year we have made 52 appearances. Our biggest show was the just concluded National High School Rodeo finals held in Ogden. We had two performances each day, 11 in all and fought from 40 to 50 head of bulls each day." Is Married Herb is married to the former Lyla Hall of Malad and they have two daughters, Stacy, 5, and Loral, 3. "My wife wasnt too happy with my chosen profession, but has gradually accepted it," he said. Herb is employed at Defense Depot Ogden. They make their home in Tremonton. Dean is married to the former Janet DeLucia of Ogden (Janet participated In high school rodeos herself). They have two sons and one daughter, Gary, 6, Wendy, 4 and Jason a mere and attends all performances along with her husband . Dean is also employed at Defense Depot Ogden and their home is in Ogden. Asked if they would recommend this life for others, Herb You unhesitatingly replied, bet, if they have the desire; its a colorful and exciting life.
