They first fell at home in a 2 - 1 sudden death nail biter against Park City on Sept. 30. On Oct. 2, Judge Memorial ran a 9 - 2 victory against Uintah that still had a silver lining. The Lady Utes now wait to see who they will meet in the play in game of the state tournament. Morgan is the likely candidate, but Lady Ute Coach Heather Calder will not receive word until today. She expects the play in game to be in Heber on Oct. 9. After a tight fight in the first half, neither No. 2 ranked Park City nor the Lady Utes had found the goal. Uintah was playing in fine form. In all of the games Ive officiated at involving Uintah this season, this is the best Ive seen them play, said one of the officials just following the half break. He said he was impressed with their passing and teamwork. About mid way through the second half, Park City took a shot at the Lady Ute goal and hit the top goal cross bar. The ball deflected down and forward but the official on that end of the field said the ball had broken the plane of the goal. Others on the sidelines questioned the call but Park City was awarded the first point of the game under a little cloud. Shortly later, Alisha Merkley took a direct shot on the Park City goal and evened the score. Nothing materialized by either team from then until the regula tion clock expired forcing the sudden death or golden goal overtime. The Lady Utes lost possession after opening play and in a flash, the Miners hit a shot from the side to win 2 1 . In the Judge game, one might say that looking for something good in a 9 - 2 final score would take some stretching. However, for Calder, it was just a matter of practical math and statistics. She said that up until that game, Judge Memorial opponents had only scored three times the whole season. She also said that most of those came ori penalty kicks. The two Uintah goals brought the total to five opposing goals for the season, they came in the same game and they resulted from play action rather than free kicks. That was enough to provide the measure of success for Calder. Kelsey Peltier scored the first goal and Kaleena Peltier got the second stemming from a comer shot. We played excellent against Park City, said Calder. Against Judge, we didnt do as well and had a couple of let downs that helped them. Calder said Morgan and Tooele will play this week to determine who goes on to the play in game. If Morgan succeeds, as Calder expects, she will find out today and will load the Lady Utes on the buses tomorrow and head for the play in game in Heber. -- Lindy Jones fights to get the bail down the field.
