Show Wednesday, October 8, 2003 Vernal Express RSVP Sow Creative recognizes local volunteers Conference to feature Paulino Richards Pauline Richards will present this From year's keynote address, Second Hand to First Class,at the Sew Creative Conference," cosponsored by Uintah and Duchesne County Extensions. The Conference will be held Thursday, Oct. 23. at the USU Uintah Basin Campus, 987 East Lagoon Street, Roosevelt. Since time is money, Richards will teach students to expand their wardrobe dollars while sharpening their sewing and consumer skills. A trunk show will be conducted beautiful featuring consignmentthrift store finds that been transformed have with embroidery, altered easily, or used as part of a new garment. Teaching how to make a dated garment look new again will be demonstrated with jackets made from silk dresses, sweaters with new lives, etc. Consumers will learn what to look for and what to avoid when shopping for vintage fabrics and garments in consignment and thrift stores or yard and estate sales. Pauline Richards comes with a wealth of experience. She publishTotal the es Embellishment Newsletter and is known for her innovative stories in Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery, Sew Beautiful and Better Homes and Gardens Creative Home. Richards offers useable, timely inspiration and help for creative sewers who appreciate new ideas. She also loves to recycle and frequently goes fabric and trim shopping at thrift stores. are Businesses invited and encouraged to join the conference for the Vendors Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Concurrent workshop sessions will offer a wide variety of topics presented by energetic teachers from around the state. Other talented presenters include Korrine Hulling of Roosevelt; Lindsey Enloe and Yvonne Mullins of Vernal; and LaRea Clark of Ogden. Cost of the conference, including lunch, will be $15. Why aren't simple vision screenings or distance vision tests using a Snellen chart adequate? They only identify five per cent of vision problems in children. And while they offer an early indication of problems relating to distance eyesight, they miss other critical vision deficiencies that can affect a childs eye health, development and school and learning performance. A child who checks out 2020 on the Snellen eye chart may still have vision problems that need to be corrected. A comprehensive eye exam measures a number of visual skills that are critical to a childs healthy vision including the abil'ty to use both eyes as a team, the ability for How early a child should have his or her eyes first examined may be earlier than many parents think. Many eye care professionals recommend a child have an eye exam before starting school, preferably by the age of three. After that, eye exams should be performed regularly because vision problems can emerge as children grow. Even if theres ro evidence of a problem, it is important for a child to be examined before entering school. Call your spouse and plan an activity together that doesnt cost any money. Be more critical of commercials and advertising. Reprogram your thinking. Picture the Jones as the thriftiest people you know and then try' to keep up with them. Simon says that by spending less, not more, couples will have the energy and resources to invest in their marriage.
