Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday. April 5, 1989 Seniors by Nell Dalton The Seniors had a busy March with activities as var-ibl- e as the weather. At the meeting on March 1, r they watched the movie at the center. Eleven members and Malva Ransdell, director, enjoyed the movie and the popcorn and candy. On March 6, 14 Seniors and the driver enjoyed a trip to the Anasazi Heritage Center near Dolores. After viewing the exhibits, we went on to Cortez and enjoyed lunch at the Golden corral. It was a very nice day both weather-wis- e and trip-wisOn March 8 only eight showed up at the Center for recreation day but they had some fun games at the two tables. On Wednesday, March 15, a good crowd turned up to hear Larry Putnam, hospital administrator, talk about the swing beds at the hospital. He also answered questions from the group. Veda Pehrson took blood pressure readings. On Monday, March 20, driver Frank Morrell and 16 Seniors traveled to the Island in the Sky area at Canyonlands National Park. It was our first spring picnic and although the weather was less than perfect Wind-walke- e. for the occasion, we still enjoyed the picnic some braving the outdoors at the tables and others seeking the warmth of the bus. The scenery was magnificent and a lot of it could be viewed from inside the bus. Potluck dinner at the center was enjoyed by 24 people on March 22. The theme was western with most everyone decked out in their western cloths. The tables were decorated with Dorothy Jones cowboy and cowgirl dolls. The menu was Navajo tacos with lots of salads and deserts. Nell Dalton was in charge of the program. Charley Tracy sang Mama Dont Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys. JJ Steffen played some favorite selections on the - Page 18 harmonica. Ofie Miller and Alma Nichols did the dance put your little foot. Nell recited some Looking for former USS Boston shipmate cowboy poetry, including one she wrote, How the West was Lost. Alma Nichols rounded out shipmates before-and-after-dinn- er the program by singing country and western songs and accompanied herself on the piano and then on the guitar. At the end, we all joined in the singing. The last activity in March was a trip to the nursing home on March 29. Only four Seniors and the driver, Doyle Rowley, went, but we had a nice visit with the residents at the home and enjoyed the beautiful spring flowers and Navajo willow trees in Blanding. Oh, and the blooming apricot trees. It was like a trip into spring. Extra good lunches were served every Tuesday and Thursday in March with an extra lot of people to enjoy them. They also had a lot of lunches. take-ou- t We are sorry to hear that Veda Pehrson had the misfortune to fall and break her ankle and her wrist while visiting her daughter, Rita Johnson, and family for the Easter season. She will be incapacitated for quite some time, the break being extra severe. Ritas address is: 11831 Oak Ridge Road, Sandy, Utah 84070. Hazel French has consented to take blood pressure readings on health day during Vedas absence. Thelma Harral, our president, has been on the sick list. We are glad that she is feeling better. Etna Schafer is visiting in Canadian, Texas with her brother and other relatives. Maxine Allred visited with her daughter, Kay Nielson, and family in Cedar City for Easter. Maxine Lyman was visited by most of her children for Easter. A lot of Seniors and their families went looking for warmer climates (which arent all that far away) for Easter picnics. The heavy cruiser Boston went to a well deserved retirement in the early 1970s. But proud in tradition the year 1980 found the U.S.S. Boston returning to the fleet, this time as a nuclear powered fast attack submarine still serving and protecting the liberty, freedom and ideals of this country. The U.S.S. Boston shipmates of the 703 will be holding its next reunion 1989 in Nashua, on July New Hampshire. For additional information contact: U.S.S. 21-2- 3, Boston Reunion, P.O.
