Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 5, 1989 - Page 6 CEU Changes in LPN program at Head Start parents feted Over 200 parents of Head Start students were guests of honor at an appreciation dinner sponsored by the Head Start staff on March 17 in Bluff. The annual dinner is held to honor parents who assist staff members at six Head Start centers operated by the Utah Navajo Development Council. According to Jeanie Kiro, parent involvement specialist, the parents are a major part of the programs success. We have many parents who really help us. They spend a lot of hours in the centers, Kiro said. Kiro singled out Samuel and Betty Fatt as exemplary parents. We presented the Fatts with a gift for over 700 of help at the Monument Valley Center, Kiro said. She recounted the Fatts daily trips from Paiute Farms, a drive, to bring their son Marvin to the class. After they get here, they stay much of the day and help with the children. They do that every day. Head Start parents and staff listened to guest speaker Caleb Roanhorse, executive director of the Navajo Nation education 48-mi- division. Calling parents the prime educators of their children, Roanhorse praised the parents for their involvement and interest in their childrens education. He said the parents involvement will carry on in their childrens education in later years. Mark Maryboy, UNDC education director, offered closing remarks, commending parents and staff for a successful program. Entertainment at the dinner was provided by Blanding recording artist Stan Bronson and members of the Sunshine Generation, a childrens dance and singing group. Head Start students from the Bluff center songs performed finger-playand dance numbers. Lynette Hadden, executive director of the Southeastern Utah Community Action Program, acted as master of ceremonies.
