Show i f X THE AN RECORD Wednesday September 7, 1988 - Page 20 Wilson visits Navajo officials Ted Wilson, Utah Democratic gubernatorial candidate, met with Navajo officials in an hour-lonmeeting August 26 in Blanding. Those in attendance included Utah Navajo chapter representatives, and officials from the g Utah Navajo Development Council and Utah Navajo Industries. Chapter representatives came from Aneth, Oljato, Blanding and Red Mesa. I I 1 The meeting gave local Navajo groups a chance to i question Wilson about his policies toward Navajos. The candidate responded to questions on Navajo representation, t economic development on the I r, reservation, better relations between Utah and the Navajo Tribe, land trades, and use of tribal lands for development. Marky Maryboy, San Juan County commissioner, introduced Wilson. Among the issues Wilson discussed, Navajo representation on the Utah Division of Indian Affairs generated the most interest. UNDC Executive Director Lester Lansing told Wilson the local chapter communities would like to see more Navajos on the UDIA board of directors. The board administers oil royalty funds derived from the Utah portion of the Navajo reservation. Currently, three board members are Navajo. Robert Billie Whitehorse, Navajo Tribal councilman from Aneth, asked Wilson for a closer relationship between the Utah governors office and Navajo tribal headquarters in Window nine-memb- er Rock. Utah Navajo Industries .i re- presentatives questioned the candidate about funding from the state economic development office for small businesses on the reservation. They also asked about funding for the UNI marina operations at the San Juan arm of Lake Powell. Wilson said he favors Navajo involvement in making decisions about their own land. Executive Director Lansing said Navajos left the meeting better informed and with an impression that the democrats are campaigning hard for the upcoming election. The Hitchin' Post Boot Shop Utah Power will lower its rates by $1.9 million beginning in September. Combined with two previous, 1988 reductions, UP&L rates have decreased about 3.25 percent since January. The latest reduction is made possible by UP&L's efforts to refinance securities that were issued during periods of higher interest rates. This rate reduction is further evidence of Utah Power's commitment to reduce energy prices. Cortez. Colorado BOOTS FOR LESS DO ! Need boots or shoes repaired? Leave work at an Juan Record POL .v - |
