Show THEBAN JOAN BECdBU' Wednesday first-com- e Cowboy rendezvous set for Sept. 1 0 A Cowboy Rendezvous in Monticello on September 10 will be a day full of fun and games for local cowboys and great for the spectators. As a sport of the Monticello Centenpart nial Celebration, the Rendez- vous will be held at the San Juan County Fairgrounds beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is invited. The events are: Pack Race: two man team. Must provide pack saddle, paniards, tarp? lash rope and pack animal. Cargo will be Team must pack provided. animal (using diamond hitch), go around cone at end of arena, return to starting line and unpack animal. Fastest time wins. Calf Branding: three-ma- n team, two on horseback. Must head and heel calf, apply hot brand, earmark and vaccinate. Riders will be allowed to leave their horses to assist with doctoring. Fastest time wins. Time will be added for blotched brands and poor earmark. Cattle and branding equipment will be provided. Wild cow milking: team. Must rope cow from horse and extract enough milk to pour. Fastest time wins. Potato race: two-mateam. One man on horseback brings potatoes from barrel to bucket while another man guards the bucket. Each team must provide own potato stick. two-ma- n first-serv- e entry Two-ma- n team. Cow Cutting: two-ma- n team. Cut cow from herd and push through gate on horseback. Fastest time wins. There is a e time limit. three-minut- Breakaway Calf Roping: Two loops. Two age groups: 14 and under; and, 15 and over. Barrell Race: groups: 14 September' 7,'l'988 ' a. i n r BLM reports new oil fields in San Juan basis due to a limited number of cattle. Entries will be accepted at the Extension Office in the county courthouse through September 9 and at the fairgrounds on the day of the Rendezvous. n Cowhide race: - Crampton lecture tonight at 7:30 A slide show and commentary by historian Dr. C. Gregory Crampton is being held- - this evening at the Moab Civic Center at 7:30. Included in the subjects portrayed will be some of the more prominent places lost to Lake Powell. The public is invited to attend the free show. During the past 12 months, three new oil fields have been discovered in Utah within the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Yates Petroleum Corporation has drilled four wells in the Cazador Unit located in the Bug Canyon area. Quintana Petroleum is developing the Caballo Unit at the upper end of Mustang Flat near the head of Alkali Canyon. BWAB drilled a well on Cajon Mesa near the Colorado border to discover a new oil field, and Marathon Oil is testing a well north of Monticello. This well could open a brand new area. Meridan Oil has expanded production to include four wells in their Cherokee oil field seven miles southest of Blanding in Alkali Canyon. Raymond T. Duncan Oil Properties has drilled two more wells in their previously discovered field in Cave Canyon. BTA Oil Producers, Bass Enterprises Production Company, Dugan Production Corporation, Chieftain International, E.P. Operating Company, Samedan Oil Corporation, and Santa Fe Energy Company have also drilled on Bureau of Land Management lands during the past year. Although there is very little drilling at this time, drilling activity is expected to increase this fall and early winter. School board meeting schedule Two age and under; and, 15 and over. Both sexes eligible to compete. There is a $2 entry fee per team per event. The calf contest will be on a branding 1988-8- 9 The school board of the San Juan County School District will vary the meeting place of their monthly meetings during the coming school year.
