Show t THE SAN JUAN RECORD by Dennis Hinkamp Utah State University High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, needs be controlled either through diet or use of medication. Of the 10 most prescribed drugs in the two United States, are for hypertension. It is estimated that 60 million people in the United States have high blood pressure. Of these about 40 percent are either undetected or untreated. Some of the most recent research suggests that there sure several dietary factors related to hypertension, says Noreen Schvaneveldt, dietitian in the Utah State University College of Family Life. She says this is good news for those who suffer from the many side effects of the hypertension medication. In many cases, blood pressure can be lowered enough through dietary modification that drug therapy can be avoided. Schvaneveldt says the link between sodium and hypertension is the most talked about, but researchers are also finding a relationship between calcium and hyertension. Although calcium and its relationship with Osteoporosis have been emphasized in the media, many people are still deficient in the mineral. Increasing calcium consumption to Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) level of about 800 mg per day often lowers blood pressure, Schvaneveldt says. Excellent dietary sources of calcium are dairy products 2 DRIVE INTO NEW OPPORTUNITIES c 3 With the added benefits of car telephone service, you're in the drivers seat and on your way to more business opportunities than ever before imaginable (and greater customer satisfaction). FREEDOM SO GOOD NEVER . such as low fat and skim milk, yogurt and cheese. She says in general, two cups of milk per day along with a varied diet will meet your RDA for calcium. Weight has also been associated with hypiertension. Getting down to ideal weight can reduce blood pressure. She says the incidence of hypertension is two to three times higher in people who are overweight compared to those of ideal weight. Weight reduction lowers arterial pressure. A weight loss of as little as 10 pounds can substantially reduce the blood pressure of some patients. Schvaneveldt. Although the exact mechanism isnt known, she says alcohol has also been found to be related to high blood pressue. defined as Heavy drinking 45 or more drinks per month has been associated with high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressue, reducing or eliminating alcohol may reduce your blood pressure. Although all these measures may decrease your blood pressure, do not stop taking your medication without the consent of your physician.
