As always, hunter success will depend a great dealontheweather thatoccursduringthedeerhunt, said Bruce Giunta, Central Region wildlife manager. Weather really affects access to various areas and the success hunters find, he said. If it doesnt rain or snow hunters should enjoy good success in Weve seen steady growth since the low point was reached in 1993, Giunta said of deer herds in the region. Each and every year since then weve seen slow but reasonably steady growth, and we believe there are few more deer this year than were present Do typically enjoyed each Division of Wildlife Re jig and grub combinations have all been effective. Almost 4,900 deer were taken in 1997, for a success rate of 29 percent. Overall, deer herds in the mountainous areas of the region located east of 5 are doing qu ite well, Giunta said. Were seeing good growth in the herds and many of them are approaching management objectives. The growth of deer herds in areas of the region west of has been slower. Growth in deer numbers on the desert mountain ranges west of has been less favorable, with the Oquirrh Mountain herd perhapsbeing the best of the lot, Giunta said. Three reminders for those hunting the region: The Vernon Unit remains closed to hunting. Those hunting the Wasatch Plateau (Manti Mountain) in Sanpete County must have a Southeastern Region deer permit to hunt the area. A Central Region permit is needed to hunt elsewhere in Sanpete County. That portion of the Wasatch Mountains management unit located in Salt Lake County, known as the Wasatch Front extended archery area, is an archery only, hunters choice huntingunit. Any deerarcheiy permit, regardlessof region, is valid there. The hunt in the Wasatch Front extended archery area runs through Dec. 13. Northeastern Afairly mild winter in the Uintah Basin should result in Northeastern Region hunters finding increasednumbersofdeerasthey take to the field Oct. 17. Our survival rates were good (thisyear), said Steve Cranney, Northeastern Region wildlife manager. We definitely had a good carry over of fawns and other age classes ofdeer. Well certainly see more yearling bucks than we did last year. We should have a good hunt this year, Cranney said. LastyearNortheastem Region general season deer hunters enjoyed a 29 percent success rate, as more than 11,700 hunters took almost 3,400 deer. Cranney said those hunting on the South Slope and Currant Creek units should find good success this year. Deer populations in Daggett County are still lower than wed like to see, Cranney said of prospects in that area. He also said the deer population on the Avintaquin Unit was somewhat stagnant, and deer numbers there would be lower than some of the other units. The regions final unit open to hunting, the Anthro Unit, is more of a desert unit. It doesnt have a lot of summer range and doesnt hold a lot of deer. Hunters who know the Anthro Unit often do quite well, though, which is exactly the advice Cranney has for hunters looking to increase their success. Choose an area, learn it well, and stick with it year after year, Cranney advises. The more you know a piece of real estate, the betteryourchancesof consistently finding deer. One concern Cranney has for general season hunters is them getting lost, especially if theyre hunting a new area that isnt familiar to them. Even the old, veteran hunters can get turned around when storms move in that cut down visibility, he said. Cranney strongly encourages hunters to let someone at home and camp know where theyre going, and when they plan to return. I le also has two other reminders for those hunting the region thisyear: Inan effort to helpdeer herds in the Book Cliffs recover, the BookCliffsUnit remains closed to hunting. A substantial amount of land in the Uintah Basin is Ute tribal land and is not open to public hunting. I Iuntersareencouraged to obtain maps, available from Division offices, to learn Ute tribal boundaries. Southeastern Region Fair deer hunting is expected in the DivisionsSoutheastem Region this season. Weve seen slight improvement in the regions deer herds, said Jim Karpowitz, Southeastern Region wildlife manager. All units are below harvest objectives, but are improving. .Last year 35 percent of Southeastern Region general season hunters were successful in taking a deer, with more than 10,900 hunters taking more than 3,800 deer. As good, or slightly better hunter success, is expected this year. Buckdoe ratios are pretty consistent across the regions general season units, which include the Manti, Range Creek, San Rafael, LaSalMoun tains andAbajo Mountains. Although theregions units fall below the statewide n objective of 15 bucks' 100 does, each unit is improving. For the first time in several years, the north part of the region should be as good or better than the south part of the region, Karpowitz said. For years the Abajo and LaSal Mountains had been the shining stars of the regions deer units. Thanks to increasing reproductive success and recruitment of young animals into the herd, the Manti deer herd on the Wasatch Plateau is on the rebound and should provide some of the best hunting in the region. Hunters are reminded that the Book Cliffs and Henry Mountains units remain closed to deer hunting during the 1998 deer seasons. Elk Ridge and the Dolores Triangle may be hunted only by limited entry permit holders. Also, the deer herd on the San Rafael unit is limited mostly to agricultural land in western Emery County, which is private property and accessible only to those with permission to trespass. post-seaso- Southern Region A mild winter resulted in almost no fawn loss on any of the regions units and good numbers of deer should await hunters Oct. 17. In 1997, 31 percent of the more than 19,100 hunters who hunted the popular region took a buck during the general season hmit. Almost6,000deerwereharvested. These are the best water distribution and rangeconditionsIVe seen in years, Jeff Grandison, Southern Region wildlife manager said ofconditions in theregion this year. Theres food and water for deer everywhere, he said. While these conditions have helped Southern Regiondeernum-ber- s increase, they also may make it tough to locate deer. Scouting is going to be at a premium this year, because the deer are really scattered, he said. One item hunters may wish to lookfor are good numlxTsof aeon is, which Grandison said will only ie found at certain elevations this year. We have a really good acorn crop down low but not a good crop up high, he said. The deer will probably be on those acorn crops, alrout the t line if the hunt. Grandison said the mild winter resulted in the best fawn survival in the region in a couple of years. I would expect to six? a few moreyearlingbucks in the harvest than weve seen the past ample of years, he said. SPORTS FANS!
