We were reminded frequently by our leaders, and even reminded ourselves, as boys, of the privilege it was to be of service to others. There were times when there was not a lot of good turn material showing in plain sight, and we would have to sort of scrounge around for something we could do. I know there were many times the people in our town would put on their thinking caps real quick, to figure out some sort of little chore they could have us do, so we could accomplish that coveted good turn, Que Blackburn and I had been playing together one day and suddenly found ourselves with nothing to do. Hey, lets go do our good turn for theday, Quesuggested, after we had tried unsuccessfully to come up with something we could do for entertainment. That sounds good to me, I replied, but what are we going to do? Lets go up to Jane Jones house and see if she has anything we can do. We immediately headed in that direction. Now, Jane Jones was a widow who lived in the last house to the North of town. She lived there alone, and we were sure she could use the help of two young, energetic boys. I cant tell a lot about Jane Jones, but I do remember one thing, if my mother ever needed a top made for a quilt, she went to Jane. She could make quilt blocks and sew them together in some of the most beautiful patterns youd ever see. Like most other people in town, when Jane opened the front door, and we made our request for something to do for a good turn, she scratched her head and thought for a moment before she finally spoke. Well, I guess you can carry some coal and wood in for me. We were jubilant to have found our good feet long, and about two inches in diameter. My eyes must have betrayed an element of concern, because Que gave me one more bit of instruction when he said, Now, and marched forth to the coal pile. While I dont move. Unless, the touch is one that hurts. Yet, we all need this caring and comforting touch, at every age, in some Many mix up physical touch with sexual gratification. This could in some measure, account for young people being involved in premature sex. Sex may seem to be the way to get the physical caring and comforting they need, since they do not receive it or see others receive it where they live. Our frontier isolation may have built walls for people to protect themselves from looking for physical comforting. This means that many do not give it as well as, they do not look to receive it. Although many of us were taught and learned not to give or look for physical comforting, we can now learn to give and teach the future generation to give and receive touch in healthy ways. We do that by giving and receiving it ourselves. In your house Is there a hug for the preteen to say, I love you, thats why I scolded you.? Is there a gentle hand on your spouses arm to say, I know you are here and will pay full attention to you in a work, I never have. But with only two truly viable choices, what if theyre both morally lacking? I agree that we shouldnt be judgemental of President Clinton as a man, but as a symbol of our nation, we have every right to.
