Show ' pwpw ttpiipi D Five Emery County High seniors and a member of the schools math department have received recognition from the Tandy Technology Scholars program. They are Christopher Thorpe, Mindy Anderson, Jennifer Hodson, Katie Oveson, Liza Winget and teacher Jed Jensen. This is the fourth year that the Tandy Technology Scho lars program has made awards to teachers and graduating seniors at American high schools. As of March, 13,860 public and private secondary schools had been certified to participate in the awards program. That is almost 61 percent of all secon-dai-y schools in the United States. The states with the highest percentage of certified schools are Colorado, Hawaii, Programs, grants available at Emery Merlin Weber, counselor at Emery County High School, has announced that the following programs and scholarships are available to high school applicants: Anytown, USA, is a summer camp open to students who are in high school for the school 1992-9- 3 year. It runs and costs $110. Financial aid is available to delegates on a need basis. Applications are available in the counseling office. Applications are available at the counseling office for the Governors Honor Academy. Application deadline is May 1. From June 27 to July 24, Yale offers a summer psychology course for students in grades 9, 10 and 11. The course costs $2,500 which includes housing, meals, tuition and social and recreational activities. Utah State University is looking for students to enroll in its Business Teacher Education Program. They have scholarship funds and oppor Aug. 8-- 14 tunities for work in their department. The Junior Statesman Summer School offers courses at Yale, Georgetown, Stanford and the University of Texas at a cost of $2,075. The program is open to outstanding high school students who will not be graduating from high school in May of 1993. The tui- tion covers textbooks and other academic expenses and housing and meals. It does not cover transportation costs to the schools. There is a limited opportunity for scholarships. See the counseling office for more details. On June Emery District will be offering a Prevention Dimension Conference Together We Can." The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be held in the Emery High School auditorium. The conference is open to educators, parents and 3-- 4, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Texas and Wyoming. The academic top 2 percent of graduating seniors in certified schools are eligible to receive certificates recognizing their academic achievement. This year the Tandy Technology Scholars program will honor 23,259 meritorious seniors. Each certified school may nominate a senior who is outstanding in mathematics, science or computer science. These students receive a certificate recognizing them as a Tandy Technology Scholar. In addition, they are eligible to compete for one of the 100 $1,000 scholarships awarded annually. This year almost d of all schools in the United States participated in this area of the program. The 100 student national finalists who receive $1,000 one-thir- scholarships represent schools in more than half of the 50 states. Each certified school also may nominate an outstanding teacher in mathematics, science or computer science. These teachers education Don spent an enjoyable sub-divisi- Donald Avery Dunford, age 48, has returned home to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father. He passed away March 25, 1993 in the U of U hospital as a result of a valiant and lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis (CF). Don was born of goodly parents, Avery and Helen Scovill Dunford, on Dec. 3 1944 in Orangeville. He was the oldest of three children. Don married (Lola) Kaye Laws, his eternal companion, Aug. 12, 1966 in the Manti LDS Temple. Most of their married life had been spent in Roy, with one son, but they also lived in Price, Green River and Ogden. Don graduated from East Car Vera Valeen Cowley Thorderson, 72, of Price, died April 2, 1993. She was bom June 25, 1920 in Ephraim to Don C. and Lewzina Larsen Cowley. Married Julius S. Thorderson Aug. 8, 1915 in Cleveland. She was a member of the LDS Church. She is survived by her children, Julene and Kelly of Price, David of American Fork and Carol Hartmann of Salt Lake City. Funeral services were held Monday, April 4, at the Price 3rd Ward LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Cleveland Cemetery under in-la- Sun-ny.sid- the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
