In the top of the seventh' Emery added two earned the Uintah Utes. A lack of offense by Emery didn't bother junior pitcher Dean Stilson who was on the hill for the Spartans. Six hits provided just five runs for Emery, but the five runs were more than enough for Stilson who went the distance and got the win. No walks were issued and eight strike outs were recorded by Stilson who was in complete control throughout the game. Uintahs pitcher also threw a good game as he held Emery scoreless until tne third inning when Zac Davis led off with a walk. He then advanced to second on an error by the third baseman who made a bad throw to the second baseman attempting to turn a double play. Gary Bennett fouled out for the first out of the inning, and Dean Stilson hit a ground ball but made it to first as the first baseman dropped the throw. Davis scored on the play to put Emery on top The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Trent Wakefield reached base when the third baseman made a bad throw to first. Wakefield went to second on the overthrow. Gary Bennett then singled to advance Wakefield to third. On the next pitch Bennett stole second, and Wakefield scored on an overthrow by the catcher. Later in the inning Bennett scored on a pass ball to give 1-- 0. runs. First, Dean Stilson doubled to start off the inning, Shawn Alton followed with a single, then the clean-u- p hitter, Jason Bennett, knocked both runners in with a single. The score was 0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Hopes for a rally were smashed for Uintah as the first batter flew out to center field, and Stilson struck out the next two to end the game and give Emery a 0 record in region play. Earlier in the week Emery traveled to Richfield to face the 1992 state 2A champs. Six team home runs were hit as the Spartans whipped the Of those six Wildcats 17-home runs, two were hit by Shawn Alton and two were hit by Zac Davis. The other two were hit by the Bennett brothers, Gary and Jason. Other offensive highlights were provided by Gary Bennett and Shawn Alton who were both 4 for 4, Jason Bennett went 3 for 4, and Danny Stucki and Zac Davis were each 2 for 4. ' V' -- ' 5-- V- r1 11 ' f. , r 4 A and is look- ing to improve that record when it plays at home this Wednesday against Union in a region contest The Emery junior varsity is also hot, winning games against Richfield, Carbon and Uintah last week. The population of Emery County takes a tremendous 7 jump during the Easter weekend each year as hundreds of guests come to the area to enjoy the spring weather on the San Rafael. On Thursday, Emerys JV played a double-head- er at Carbon and came away with a pair of wins, 4 and 10-Sophomore Landon Jacobson pitched Emery to the win in the first game, going seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out nine. Gordon was 3 for 3 in the game with an RBI while Jacobson had two hits. In the second game, sophomore Buzz Rondinelli picked up the win by going five and 6-- two-thir- ds 8. innings. Junior Kevin Northrup came in to relieve Rondinelli in the bottom of the sixth, and he got Emery out of a difficult situation in that inning and then struck out two of four batters in the bottom of the seventh. Northrup and Jay Stilson had triples in that game, and Rondinelli had a double and a single to go with a pair of singles by Hiatt. At Uintah, sophomore Trent Wakefield got the win in the game as he one in the 1 hit gave up just win. Getting hits in the game were Hiatt, Siilson, Northrup and Josh Farmer. The Emery JV record is five-inni- ng 4-- sun too, and that means that federal lands will be bustling with activity this weekend. Because of the number of people who recreate in Emery County each spring, the BLM has issued a reminder of some of the restrictions and guidelines to follow when on federal lands. Although the winter has been a wet one, the BLM still reminds campers not to leave campfires unattended and to extinguish fires when camp is broken. Also, recreationists should be aware of OHV restrictions in the areas where they are camping and visiting. BLM officials say that if you are not sure of the restrictions, you should obtain a travel map which shows all restrictions. ground ball is fielded by Emery second the play up. A Girls win four in Saturday tourney CASTLE DALE In an softball tournaimpromptu ment at Emery High last Saturday, the Lady Spartans played four games and earned four wins in nonconference action. Since the SUU Tournament in Cedar City was rained out earlier this season, the tournament at Emery was set up to give teams some games not originally on the schedule. Participating were the Emery varsity and junior varsity and varsity and junior varsity teams from Spanish Fork, South Sevier and Timpview. Emery defeated South Sevier 3, Spanish Fork JV Timpview 20-- 8 and Spanish Fork 10-6-- 7-- 3, 0. Senior Brooke Griffin pitched Emery to three of the four wins while Natalie Swa-se- y pitched in the win against Timpview. Against South Sevier, Emery fell behind 0 in the first inning but scored three times in the second to take the lead. Griffins double scored Heidi Kay and Katie Oveson to put the game at and Griffin scored on a throwing error. Emery added a run in the third when Swasey singled and then scored on a pass ball. South Sevier cut the lead to 3 with a run in the fourth, but in the bottom of the inning, Emery scored again on a pair of hits by Shanna Ward and Griffin. Emerys final run came in the fifth when Michelle Baird scored after singling. Emery and the Spanish 2-- 2-- 2, 4-- il The Emery Club will be sponsoring their rodeo April 23 and 24 at the Castle Dale Arena. for Easter weekend 5. 9-- 0 Most of the team will compete in Tooele and Grantsville this coming weekend. Of the 29 members in the club 19 have already qualified. Many of these are packing 20 or more points in their events. BLM issues advice 'A '. 1-- undefeated at Several of Emerys rodeo club members traveled to the Golden Spike Arena this past weekend in hopes of gathering a few more points or of qualifying. Of the few cowboys who went, Jesse Gilbert placed third in calf roping, and Justin Truman with his partner, Dusty Mills of Carbon, captured third in team roping. Kristi McElprang tied for reporter f' !& v fourth in breakaway roping while teammate Kate Kofford placed fifth. ERC 3-- Last week the Emery High baseball team opened up region play with a 0 win over by Kate Kofford Fork varsity matched up in one of the better games of the tournament. Emery scored four runs in the first and looked like it would walk away with the win, but Spanish came back with four in the second to tie the game. A run in the second put Emery on top 4 as Ward 5-- scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Oveson. Emery took a 4 lead in the third with two more runs which came in on a triple by Ward, and in the fourth, the score went to 104 as Emery added three more runs on hits by Krissy Childs, Oveson, Jamie Jeffs and Baird. Spanish began to make a move in the fifth by scoring three runs to put the score at 10-and the Lady Dons 7-- 7, added two in the sixth to come within one at 10-- The game ended with the tying run on third after an Emery fielding error. Emery had little trouble with Timpview, scoring seven runs in the first inning and never facing a threat after that. Ward had a triple in the game, Jeffs had two singles and two walks, Jaime Mon-frehad a double, a single and a walk, Katie Oveson had a double and a walk, and Siegred Christensen had a double, a single and a walk. Emery got a lot of production in the middle of its lineup in the game with the Spanish JV as Jeffs had a single and a triple, Baird had three singles, and Jaime Monfredi had 9. di (Continued on Page 7. The BLM advises that visitors tread lightly on the federal lands. Some old trails have rocks placed across them to serve as a reminder that they are closed to OHV traffic. The BLM asks that these closures be respected. There will be BLM employees in the field for the Easter holiday. They will offer assistance to the public. As the BLMs Price office now has a U.S. ranger permanently assigned to the Price River and San Rafael Resource areas, visitors should expect to see him and other BLM law enforcement officers in the field.
