At the same time, Richfields Travis Christensen, a 66 sophomore, and Ashley Steck, a 57 sophomore, went wild for the Wildcats. That lead proved to be insurmountable for the Spartans as they lost to the Cats, The loss was the first instate loss for Emery since it lost to Wasatch in the 2A state tournament in 1988, and it was the first home-couloss for the Spartans since Jan. 11, 1985, when they were also beaten by Wasatch (see separate story). 63-4- Emery-Richfiel- 9 win over Richfields home ended a Emery winning streak that extends back to 1985. Although the Spartans had several blowouts, there were some very close games during the home winning streak. On Dec. 7, 1986, Manti used its slowed down pace to keep the scoring low, but Emery managed to pull out a 3 win. In that same season, the Spartans edged North Seiver 8 on Dec. 20, 1985, and on Jan. 3, 1986, Emery just got by RichNorth Sanpete field gave Emery a scare on Jan. 4, 1986, but the Spartans prevailed, In the next season, Emery battled North Sevier on Dec. 7 13, 1986, for a win, and later just got by Manti, 66-6- 4 on Jan. 7, 1987. Emery will travel to Utah Valley this week to play at Spanish Foi k on Friday and at Payson on Saturday. The next home game will not be until Dec. 19 when the Spartans host San Juan. 7, n ty and sophomore teams opened with wins. Behind Spartans ran into an experienced, talented Tooele basketball team at Southern Utah ,State College in Cedar City Nov. 24, dropping their second game in as many outings, As it did against Richfield in the season opener (see separate story), Emerys offense sputtered early as Tooele took a 3 lead in the first period. The Spartans got field goals from Jared Butler, Brink Griffin and Gus Childs while the team was seven of 10 from the 86-6- 9. 23-1- line. CEDAR CITY The Emery girls basketball team opened the season last week in Cedar City with mixed results. Emery lost to South Summit on Friday, but came 80-4- back to day, 58-2- 9, defeat Moab on Satur8. Against South Summit, held to just 18 fourth-quartpoints, Emery tallied just 15 as their bid fell short. Butler had his best-eve- r offensive game as a varsity player, finishing with a game high 27 points. Chris Justice also played well, finishing with 14 as he got his first varsity start. Also in double figures was Childs with 11. er Emery came on strong in the second frame, outscoring the buffaloes 2 as Butler hit for 12 in the period to go with from Childs and Ryan Burke. At the half, Emery was behind Tooele came out tough in the third period, outscoring 23-2- 45-3- the Spartans 23-1- 8, 6. but Emery showed some balanced scoring as Nathan Hunting-ton- , Chris Justice, Burke and Butler added to the Spartan totals. Although Tooele was 1989 through 1990, not only did the streak continue, but the gym became a showcase of talent. The stands were filled to capacity for each home game with standing room only. Seating was placed along the baseline, and closed-circu- it television was available in the auditorium. Season tickets were sold out well in advance of the season, and those fans who didnt have season tickets had to get to the games real early, about the time the junior varsity games got underway. Last season Emery really didnt have a serious threat as the streak continued. Coach Todd Jeffs said Monday that in many ways it is good that the streak has come to an end. I think itll take some of the pressure off our team now. The streak was great, but it had to come to an end. Now we can start work- ing on another one. Girls lose, then win Buffs hand Spartans loss The Emery talented class of 1990 entered the scene. During that period, from come-from-behi- Emery will play at Spanish Fork this Friday and then play at Payson on Saturday. Emery battled the 2A school through three periods and trailed 3 going into the final quarter. However, South Summit blew the game open by outscoring Emery 28-- 6 in the final eight minutes. Emery was led in scoring by Marci Stilson with 15 andTas-h- a Bradley with 14. The next night Emery turned things around, got out 52-4- of the blocks early against Moab and never looked back. Behind the balanced scoring of Emerys Roshelle Atwood, Julie Hansen, Stacey Bott, Kris Wilstead, Melanie Oviatt, Stilson and Bradley, the Lady Spartans held a 3 lead at the half. 33-1- Stilson then exploded for 14 points in the third period to put the game out of reach. She finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, and Atwood scored eight. Emery continued preseason action this week at Moab on Tuesday, and the Lady Spar-- ( Continued on Page 7A) Wrestling season underway The wrestling season officially began last week when Emery High School hosted its annual junior varsity tournament. The meet included teams from Emery, Spanish Fork, Carbon, East Carbon and Green River. No team scores were kept, but all the wrestlers who participated got plenty of action as they prepare for conference and tournament meets.
