Elizabeth Drew's "The Corruption of American Folitics: What Went Wrong and Why" gives a new insight on the topic. It's a fascinating, deeply distressing look at the length of our political campaigns. It also included how its horrific expense makes the primary goal of most politicians, in and out of office, that of raising money. It also shows the distant, secondary goal as the governance of the country, even then vastly influenced by the people and groups who made the first goal achievable. Everybody pretty much knows all this, of course, but Drew's acutely detailed examination of specific ways in which Congress has refused to deal with campaign finance abuses and endlessly circumvents true leadership in favor of partisan wrangling is revealing and disheartening. clear-spoke- d NEVERTHELESS, THIS fine book ends with grounds for hope and reasonable sug gestions for action. David Howarth's recently reissued account of Jan Haalsrud's unbelievable escape from the Nazis after a failed infiltration of Norway during World War II is available at the library in its original edition. Entitled "We Die Alone," thriller and it is a true-lifchiller (in both senses of the e word). Baalsrud's the lone survivor of an attempted landing in northern Norway during the War, and his capacity to survive seems endless during the course of this story wherein his own extraordinary fortitude is bolstered by the help of dozens of Norwegians who risk their own lives and the safety of their families to help him. "We Die Alone" (a mystifying title, if you think about it) is a great read. It's scary, it's suspenseful, it's filled with courage and character, and it's true.
