Ian Hunter won the 800 for BYU, clocking 1:55.79. Frank Fredericks won the dash in 6.23 seconds with teammate Eric Akogyiram second at 6.33. Leif Lundahl won the weight throw while Ron Shalvis won the pole vault (15-- ) and Loxley Walters took the triple jump Lance Greer placed second in the high and Sowah Marley was jump at second in the high hurdles at 7.77. "Our sprinters looked excellent," said BYU coach Willard Hirschi. "There were eight people in the finals of the 55 and five of them were ours. "Our new people looked good," Hirschi said. "I was very pleased." Hirschi said the distance runners did not compete. Next week the Cougars will be at home for another meet. BYU 35-l- 6-- Sunday, January 21, 1990 Large crowd sees Pepperdine down BYUspikers By KRISTIN BAYLES Herald Correspondent The 4,529 fans who packed into the Smith Fieldhouse Friday witnessed a page in BYU sports history as the Cougar mens' volleyball team hosted Pepperdine in their first home match as an NCAA team. The Cougars faced a sixth ranked Pepper-din- e squad. The Waves overcame the hoopla of the evening to win the 15-match, BYU had a balanced net attack as Gunnar Lindstoel had 21 kills. Skule Vagen added 14 while David Johnston and freshman Shawn 12th-rank- well-balanc- 15-1- 1, 9, Patchell added 15-1- 1. 13 each. Daniel Dahl had seven blocks for the Cougars. BYU had 72 kills but was plagued with 11 service errors. Pepperdine had 84 kills and 17 service errors. Brian Merrick led the Waves with 20 kills, Tom Soren-so- n added 19 and Geoff Hart had 17. Sorenson also had 10 blocks for Pepperdine. Pepperdine is now BYU's Chris Rushing came off 2-- 0 and BYU is 2-- 2. Pepperdine's Merrick served six straight as freshmen Duane Cameron and Tom Sorensen, two of the nation's top high school recruits last year, dominated the net game. The Cougars held Pepperdine to three points in the next three full rotations as they chipped away at the Waves' lead. Cortez then served for another point backed by the net play of Lindstoel and ve the bench to spark the Cougar defense. Rushing served, then dug a Pepperdine hit to set up a Lindstoel kill. Patchell then blocked a Pepperdine hit and killed the overset to narrow the lead to three at 9-- 6. A Cortez serve was mishandled BYU then held Pepperdine on five straight game points, but were unable to put points on the board. Pepperdine's Merrick capped off the 1 win with a block. In the second game, Pepperdine was leading 2 before scoring eight unanswered points. Vagen broke the Pepperdine streak, scoring on a block. BYU was trailing 14-- 3 when Johnston came alive. Johnston's kill got the ball back for the Cougars and then he served six straight points, assisted by Vagen and Scott Waddell on the net along with scrappy play by the entire BYU team. The Cougars then held Pepperdine for four straight game points before dropping the game 15-The Waves jumped out. to a 10-- 2 lead in game three before BYU rebounded to outscore Pepperdine BYU substitutes added fire to the offense, led by freshman Kris Dukeshire who had a key kill and 15-1- 3-- and the Cougars were within two. Pepperdine got the ball back, but a Lindstoel kill returned the ball to the Cougars and his kill cut the lead to one. Cougar iady netters win own invitational A sweep of Utah State Saturday gave BYU's women's tennis team its third straight victory at the Cougars' tennis invitational this week. In three days of play, BYU lost just two matches of the 27 contested. " Generally, I thought we played pretty well for the beginning of the season," said coach Ann Valentine, "but we're still fiddling around with doubles. "Sheri Yandle, Patti Urban and Lesley Barbour who have been out with injury will be on the courts Monday and we hope to have them playing doubles next weekend. We can use their experience." The Cougars will host No. 15 Miami Friday and No. 8 Arizona State Saturday on the indoor courts. Stanton, a freshman newcomer, ran a 7.38 in the 55 meters and was 26.57 in the 200.
