Show C8 Page THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 21, 1990 Sunday, January YU's elegant Winter's Tale' moving and delightful i ' By JEAN MARSHALL Herald Staff Writer A remarkably elegant production of an unusual and almost tragic fairy tale flavored by ShakesDeare opened successfully Thursday at Bngham Young University. "The Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare is an unusual blend of Play Review finally came to his senses, the king who had sent the baby in the had lost everywilderness to die one he loved. His repentance and mourning continued for 16 years. The baby daughter, who had been left in the kingdom of the best friend, was raised by humble shepherds there and fell in love with that king's son. Threatened with disinheritance, the lovers ran away to the court of the grieving king. tragedy, comedy and romance. 'Once upon a time" a king became irrationally jealous of his beautiful queen and his best friend. Unable ; The true identity of the shepherdess was revealed, and the two kines reconciled. The long lost queen, who evidently had secretly recovered and lived in seclusion, appeared to her husband as a statue that seemed to come to life. She embraced him and forgave him. On one level the fairy tale offers a happy ending. But Shakespeare's treatment makes it bittersweet. The young son and one faithful retainer are dead and the lost years cannot be restored. When the king saw the lovely statue, he poignantly remarked on the silver in her hair and the lines on her face. "The Winter's Tale" was ably directed Robert A. Nelson. Behind to listen to reason, the king's madness, forced his friend to flee for his life, frightened his young son to death, caused the early birth of his baby daughter and shortly after-- ; ward the death of his wife. When he the fairy tale quality of the story, he emphasized the realistic consequences of jealousy, anger and broken trust. At the close of the play, the magic of the living statue achieved its impact not from its mere appearance but from the powerful alchemy of repentance and forgiveness. The relationships were transformed into stronger and more valuable bonds of love and trust than existed before. Denise Dinsdale gave an outstanding performance as Hermione, the wronged queen. Her clear and informed delivery suggested both and innocence and conveyed her compassion and her dignity. Roger C. Benington was delightful in the varied role of the wily Autolycus, and Daniel Hess handled the difficult role of the jealous Leontes well. An important part of this produce tion was the elegant a kind of gazebo century set designed by Eric Fielding who with Mike Handley designed the striking lighting effects. Janet L. Swenson outdid herself with the handsome Victorian costumes moving from black and dark colors in the first half to mauve and grey and lilac in the last half. The Eastern European flavor of the shepherd costumes added an appropriate light touch. to Shakespeare, For this production is a good choice. It provides a pleasant experience, an intriguing but easily followed story and a cast of interesting characters as well as a significant theme and a memorable ending. first-time- rs turn-of-th- meet slated for Sci-f- i February Brigham Young University's annual science fiction and fantasy symposium, "Life, the Universe, and Everything," sponsored in part by The Leading Edge magazine, is in the Wilkscheduled for Feb. inson Center. , This year's symposium will feaauthor ture Newbery award-winnin- g MAKE SHOPPING MORE CONVENIENT...
