Western histofans who movie buffs and young ry want to walk in the footsteps of Billy the Kid should visit Lincoln, ;N.M. , in the thick adobe wall Inside the county courthouse- is a :bullet hole from the Kid's infamous April 28, 1881, escape in which his guardian, Deputy Sheriff J. W. Bell, Jhere - and the Kid's chief tormentor, Deputy Sheriff Bob Olinger, were shot and killed. I That daring escape, which carved ;the Kid's name in the annals of the ;01d West, was immortalized in many of the more than 40 Holly-Iwoo- d films which featured the Kid, among them Arthur Penn's symp- athetic "The Gun," I starring a puerile Paul Newman (1958); Sam Peckinpaugh's "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid," featuring James Coburn and Left-Hand- san-"gui- ne Kris Kristofferson (1973); and the Brat Pack hit "Young Guns," starring Emilio Estevez (1988). .". Besides the recently restored and -- refurbished . two-stor- y courthouse (the town's tallest structure), over 21,000 people annually often visit or stroll past 25 other quaint homes and small businesses. Most of them are owned and maintained by Ro-swell oil magnate Robert 0. Ander- son's Lincoln County Heritage Trust and by the Museum of New Mexico, which owns and operates some of them separately as Lincoln State Monument. ;Bob Hart, the trust director, acknowledged the renewed interest in the Kid. "Last summer we saw 50 percent increases in attendance (in Lincoln). When we asked people, 'Young Guns' kept popping up, esvisithe younger among pecially tors." : ; ; I ; Still other buildings remain under the private ownership of families whose forebearers knew the Kid. Local resident Joe Salazar, for ex-- i ample, is a descendant of Ygenio Salazar, who was wounded while he and the Kid were trying to escape the burning McSween home in the summer of 1878. Rafaelita Pryor, meanwhile, 'can trace her roots back to Saturnino Baca, a foe of the Kid whose pleas for help that summer brought the U.S. Army. ; For a town whose past is linked to violence, Lincoln today is pic--1 pretty for about 60 or 70 residents. 1 That first glimpse of Lincoln unfolds unforgettably for visitors. The senses seem to awaken in the ruggedness of the Rio Bonito Valley, and the smattering of simple homes and buildings Along serpentine U.S. Highway 380 that serves as Main Street. Lincoln Is the kind of place where tveryone knows everything about everybody else, and where the only noise on summer evenings is the locusts in the trees that give way to summer nights of dogs alerting the locals that you're ambling about. It's a place of palpable stillness, where the street lamps cast the blackest shadows. : Lincoln was the scene of the Lincoln County War in 1878. bloody Among those drawn into that conflict end its aftermath were cattle B iDDV if baron John Chisum, New Mexico Territorial Governor Lew Wallace (author of the novel "Ben Hur"), Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett and the Kid. Officials at the trust and state monument can quickly point out several places in Lincoln connected with the Kid. One of the most popular, then and now, is the Wortley Hotel (505653-4500- ), accommodawhose 1874-etions still welcome guests for home-cookmeals and cozy lodging. In fact, Olinger ate his last meal in the Wortley's tiny dining room. Other places in town that are equally evocative are the McSween Home site, where the war reached its violent climax during a five-da- y gun battle in July, 1878. Archaeologists who recently excavated the site found numerous shell casings from the battle. Next door is the imposing Tunstall Store. From behind a wall that jutted from beneath the pitched-roo- f building, the Kid and his pals bushwhacked the County Sheriff William Brady on April 1, 1878. Farther down the road is the trust's visitor center, with its movie theater decorated with colorful Hollywood trailers in Kid films. The list of Hollywood stars great and small who played him is surprising. Some of them were Johnnie Mack Brown, Roy Rogers, Jack Beutel (opposite bombshell Jane Russell in Howard Hughes's "The Outlaw"), Bob Steele, Robert winner Taylor and Audie Murphy. Also on exhibit at the center are letters from the Kid written to Lew Wallace; the Kid's holster, brass spurs and hunting knife; and the only authentic photograph of William Bonney, as the Kid often called himself. Taken in Fort Sumner, N.M., (purportedly in 1879), its photographer unknown, the worn, scratchy tintype was given to the trust in 1986 by Frank Upham of Orinda, Calif.
