Willis Taylor World obituaries Mvles Horton 'NEW MARKET, Tenn. (AP) Myles F. Horton, a major influence on a generation of civil rights leaders, died Friday of cancer. He was 84. In 1932, Horton helped found the Highlander Folk School near Chattanooga. Often called the backbone of the civil rights movement, the school educated impoverished Southern workers, labor union leaders and civil rights activists. Highlander was one of the few places in the South where blacks and whites could meet and discuss social change. It was closely allied with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Martin Luther King Jr. The state of Tennessee shut down Highlander in 1959, saying interracial gatherings and alleged liquor sales at the school violated the school's charter.
