Show Sunday, January 21. Cost of living stable along Wasatch Business trends r - SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The cost of living along Utah's Wasatch Front declined slightly in December, with price hikes for groceries and utilities being balanced by dips in the cost of transportation, clothing, health care and eating out, First Security Corp. says. In his monthly report, First Security economist Kelly Matthews said the cost of living declined 0.04 percent in December, compared with a adjusted increase of 0.2 percent reported nationally Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Wasatch Front Inflation Index measured at 100 in March 1988 when First Security began the stood at 100.1 in monthly report December, virtually identical with its starting base 22 months earlier. William Stillgebauer, clerk of the court, said there were 7,906 petitions filed in 1989, an increase of 265 cases over the 7,641 petitions filed in 1988. "The court did set a new record in the number of filings," Stillgebauer said, "but the percentage of case growth from 1988 to 1989 dropped to 3 percent." The 3 percent increase represented a decrease in case growth from 1938, when the number of petitions jumped 13 percent. Statistics released by the court, however, showed that a 9 percent increase in Chapter 7 petitions was the major factor in the overall 3 percent increase in filings with the court last year. There were 5,411 petitions for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 1989. That figure represented 69 percent of the case filings with the court last year. In 1988, Chapter 7 petitions numbered 4,948 and represented just 65 percent of the filings with the court. The trustee then distributes the proceeds from the liquidation to creditors. The court also noted that petitions for relief under Chapter 13 numbered 2,314 last year, a decline of 4.7 percent from the 2,428 Chapter 13 petitions filed in 1988. Chapter 13 petitions represented 29 percent of the cases filed with the court in 1989, compared with 32 percent the previous year. Under Chapter 13, an individual is given time to form a creditor-repaymeplan under the supervision of a standing trustee. Petitions filed for relief under Chapter 11 provisions of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code also declined in number and percentage. There were 174 Chapter 11 petitions filed in 1989, representing just 2 percent of the cases filed. Those petitions represented a 32 percent decline from the 256 Chapter 11 petitions filed in 1988, when they represented 3 percent of the cases. Jeff Thredgold, chief economist for KeyCorp., said the slowing increase in the rate of bankruptcy filings over the last three years could perhaps in part be attributed to the improving economy in Utah. LowSALT LAKE CITY (AP) ell M. Durham Jr., president of the ZCMI department store chain since 1985, has submitted his resignation effective April 1, company officials say. Durham, in his letter of resignation to the ZCMI board of directors, said he was leaving to pursue other interests. On April 1, Durham will have been with ZCMI for seven years, five of them as president. Marvin J. Ashton, chairman of the board, expressed the ZCMI company's "deep appreciation" for Durham's years of service. Keith Saunders, executive vice president and chief operating officer, said Thursday that Durham's resignation was not a surprise. Saunders said Durham had indicated when he first took the presidency that his time with the company "would be fairly short, maybe five years." Saunders said Durham planned to do some writing, along with "some consulting he would like to get involved in and some personal business opportunities he has." A search committee for a new president has been formed, ZCMI said Thursday. Durham expressed great satisfaction with the growth of ZCMI during his years as president and particularly in its recovery and profitability over the past two years, following a recession in 1987. During his term as president, ZCMI has added four new stores. nt (XraiCjvjriin) I i:M.JAlWiM7Eti 2 new nun nr uuu WEBB m SIX-MONT- H KEY INVESTMENT CERTIFICATE MINIMUM DETOSIT $1,000 1M LR-- 2 31 chief to step down ZCMI cy, the court appoints a trustee to supervise the liquidation of a con-feren- e, New child care center open Eastpark costs declined for a second straight month in December, down 0.5 percent, compared with a 0.3 percent increase nationwide.
