For more information, call "ManFORT MYERS, Fla. goes," the winter home of automobile manufacturer Henry Ford, will open for public tours beginning in February. Ford, who made the first automobile, bought his three-acr- e estate in 1916 to spend the winter months visiting his friend, inventor Thomas Edison. The Edison home is next door to the Ford home and separated by a fence that both families named "The Friendship Gate." Ford wintered in Fort Myers until Edison died in 1931. Trains in 1926 for the Southern Railway and still capable of serving full meals for 44 passengers at a time; the "Encoree River," a 1954 stainless steel Pullman sleeping car with ten roomettes and six complete bedrooms; and a wooden caboose which was built in 1929 and saw service on both the Florida East Coast Railroad and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad. The museum's 40 acr.es of property in Chattanooga include several miles of track, four railroad bridges, and a historic tunnel through Missionary Ridge which played an important role in the 1863 Civil War battle for Chattanooga. "The tunnel on our main line was bored in 1854-56-," Soule says. "It la Ions and most of the boring was done by hand, black powder and mule power. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used it to get behind Union General William Sherman's army which was trying to take the Confederate stronghold on Missionary Ridge. It is now on' the National Register of Historic fascina- tion for millions of Americans, perhaps because the "iron horse" played such a vital role in the growth and development of the sited States. 2fhe railroads provided the first fiddly practical and comfortable (grains of covering the vast distances btween the east and west coasts. During the 19th and early 20th centuries a thousand towns, each with its own proud little depot, sprang up beside the steel rails. Major cities developed around many of the key railheads while cither promising cities died when the railroads bypassed them. i;In the first half of the 20th fptury sleek and sophisticated tjins with such legendary names 986-fe- et Ifc The Super Chief, The Detroit fsrow, The Powahatan Arrow, and d The Crescent Limited the country carrying much of the nation's commerce and millions of passengers. .."That was the golden age of railroading," laments Robert Soule, president of Chattanooga's unique Tennessee Valley Railroad. '.'It lasted for about 40 years roughly 1910 to about 1950 and while it lasted the railroad was the way to criss-crosse- Places." The entire museum, in fact, is on the National Register of Historic Places. "It was the railroads which made Chattanooga such a strategic location during the Civil War," Soule explains. "Most of our line follows the route of one of those first rail lines, and we are still unearthing Civil War artifacts nearby." At either end of the museum's three-mil- e main line are a pair of delightful depots. At the main entrance on Cromwell Road off the Jersey Pike exit y of Highway 153 is the gorgeous brick Grand Junction Depot of 1900 vintage. The depot serves as travel." a handful of Chattanooga area residents formed the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to preserve something of that golden age of railroads. "Our major purpose is to find, preserve and restore to full operating condition as many of the classic pieces of railroad equipment as we can," Soule says. The TVRM collection of working equipment is impressive. The pride of. the museum is steam locomotive 1501 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia in 1911 and first restored to service by the museum in 1965. Other prize pieces include the "Eden Isle," a marvel-ousl- y restored 1917 office car complete with three bedrooms and four bathrooms; Dining Car 3158, built In 1961 replica of a typical small town frame depot also of the 1900 era, but it is the museum's collection of operating equipment which draws the interest of most visitors. These are fully restored and operating steam and diesel locomotives, day coaches, Pullman cars, office cars, mail cars, dining cars, and a large collection of tools and equipment, most of which are still used in the museum's back shop where much of the restoration work takes place. TVRM locomotives and cars have appeared in a number of motion pictures, television programs, and even commercials. The Tennessee Valley Railroad, however, is more than just a show-plac- e for old railroad equipment. It is a place where passenger trains still run, where steam locomotives still hiss, and where the plaintive scream of a steam whistle can still be heard, and where conductors in black coats still summon pasengers with cries of, "All aboard!" "We operate seven trains a day between the two depots on our line," Soule says. "We also operate some 'Downtown Arrow' trips between the museum and the famous Chattanooga Choo Choo, the old Southern terminal, in downtown Chattanooga. We also offer longer excursions like the Autumn Leaf Special each year in October which makes four roundtrip between' Chattanooga and Oneida, Tenn. during the peak of the fall Jan. Sitting in the dining car behind a plate of Southern fried chicken and watching the Tennessee countryside speed by the window, it is possible to believe that the golden age of America's railroads is not yet dead. As long as the Tennessee Valley Railroad continues to operate, something of America's railroad heritage and the great trains of the past will remain in the city that gave us the most famous train of all time the mythical Chattanooga Choo Choo.
