Show Wednesday, May THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 22, 1985 Bu sinless Baldrigo Meets With Soviets On U.S.-RuTrade Issues Secretary ss MOSCOW Commerce (UPI) Malcolm Baldrige held two hours of talks Monday with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and gave him a letter from President Reagan urging increased U.S- trade. Baldrige also told Gorbachev that chances of increased trade .Soviet were not good without improvements in other spheres, an official U.S. statement said. Reagan's letter, delivered during a Kremlin meeting of more than two hours, "discussed the role that trade can play in improving the working relationship" between the superpowers, the U.S. statement said. It did not elaborate. trade reached a peak of $3.6 billion in 1979 but has fallen off since then, largely because of U.S.-Sovi- et U.S. embargos and restrictions resulting from the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the 1983 shooting down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007. Tass said Gorbachev deplored the "unsatisfactory condition of trade between the two countries," which he attributed to "policies of U.S. discrimination against the Soviet Union, attempts to interfere in its internal affairs and to use trade as a means of political pressure."
