National Park Service officials, park superintendents, and scientific staff agreed Tuesday, but none offered any concrete proposals to meet the goal during a House Inlerior National Parks subcommittee hearing. "We know from our research efforts that air pollution can damage the resources that units of the National Park System have been treated to protect," said Mary Lou Grier, acting director of the park service. "All branches of government continue to wrestle with (pollution) as a major national public policy issue." The greatest pollution problem at the Grand Canyon National Park is impaired visibility, superintendent Richard Marks, testified. The Air Quality Office of the park service has been monitoring in several of the parks since 1978 and has made "substantial progress," she said. Monitoring at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in California is supported more by the California Air Resources Board than by the park service, said park superintendent Boyd Evison. "There has been documentation damage to yellow pines and black oaks in the parks attributed of to to ozone," Evison said, but the studies are too premature to predict acid rain effects. must do more to protect the pristine nature of the parks." Jim Hansen, a member of the fianel, was assured by Marks that the photographs were scientifically taken and processed to accurately reflect the existing situation. It is unclear just what the subcommittee can do about the growing pollution problem. No legislation is pending. Some members, such as Hansen, believe no new legislation is needed. Sen. Ufah Gets New License Designs SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -Utah residents will be advertising "The Greatest Snow on Earth," while highway patrolmen will be touting southern Utah's national parks on new license plate designs revealed by state officials. The designs were unveiled Tuesday to Gov. Norm The new plates for everyone except highway patrolman will feature red, white and blue colors. Across the top of the white background it says in blue and red letters "Ski Utah!" At the Ban-gerte- r. bottom in blue letters the plates say "Greatest Snow on earth," the slogan of Utah's ski industry. The patrolmen's plates features a scene from southern Utah. State Tax Commissioner Marthe Dyner said the new license plates will not be available until late September or early October and the commission will not require people to buy them. They will replace the old plates as Utahns renew their registration, she said. Dyner said people desiring to replace the old plates with new ones will have to pay $3.65 plus registration charges for one plate or $6.15 for two. The fee includes $2.50 each for the plates and $1.15 mandated by the Legislature for mailing costs, she said. The concept of the new plates comes from East High School students and an ad hoc committee of legislators, and people representing law enforcement, economic development, fine arts, travel and natural resource interests. s nnwersary from a U.S. Gypsum Co. plant and a Georgia-Pacifi- c plant.
