Show THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 22, 1985 Wednesday, May - Page f fin Study Strawberry Fish By JOHN BEST Pleasant Grave Correspondent STRAWBERRY RESERVOIR -Strategically casting their nets into the cool waters of Strawberry and Soldier Creek Reservoirs, the Division of Wildlife Resources has begun its annual gill netting operations. The netting is part of an ongoing study which evaluates fish types, populations and condition. Information from the fish netted in areas like Indian Creek Meadow, Bear Hollow, Strawberry Flats, The Knolls and Strawberry Bay, help the DWR evaluate lake conditions and plan for future stocking. 8L - r W. ve you m II with Alii' lxV't The monofilament nets are placed in selected areas at various Iff depths on Soldier Creek and Strawberry in the afternoon. As fish Ifil" : Y swim into the nets they are trapped and cannot escape. The nets are left up through the night and on the following day as the sun begins to rise in Strawberry Valley, the nets are pulled into boats. The netted fish are loaded into tubs and taken to the DWR Camp where an indepth analysis is conducted. Fish are counted, weighed, measured and then an autopsy is performed. All information is recorded and carefully studied by DWR fish biologists. This year's netting was conducted under the direction of Charlie Thompson, the Director of Fisheries in Utah's Central Region. Thompson says, "The netting showed us excellent results from Soldier Creek Reservoir and good results from Strawberry, f tidier Creek has excellent amounts of Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout. Fish are healthy and in good condition. Because of the flooding of new land around Soldier Creek there is a lot of natural feed for the fish." Strawberry nets showed large amounts of Utah Chub and Utah Sucker populations and some good amounts of trout and cutthroat. There will be good fishing for smaller rainbows and a good chance for trophy six to eight pound size natives," said Thompson. Thompson says, "The chub and sucker are the dominant species and are expanding, causing a general nuisance to game fishing." Fish biologist, Doug Sakaguchi says, "Strawberry is now such a large lake that costs for poisoning would be almost impossible. Soldier Creek and Strawberry are being combined now and it would cost $3 to $4 million to poison the lakes now." To help curb the growth of trash fish populations and also to provide more game fish, the DWR is introducing the Bear Lake native cutthroat to Strawberry. The planting of 180,000 five to seven inch natives will begin in June and continue throughout the summer. "Bear Lake Cutthroat are a predator type fish that we hope will We go all out to get you prices on Brand name, quality products, made possible through the tremendous world-wid- e combined buying power of thousands of locally owned PRO Hardware stores, home centers and building supply retailers.
