BROOKFIELD, III UPI The holiday season can be a lonely time for orphans especially for a one-toAtlantic walrus. With all the holiday tanfare and the certainty of at least some bad winter weather many of Olga's friends won't make it out to the Brookfield Zoo to visit her during her prime season - n - But the zoo is trying to do something about her sad situation, spokeswoman Olga loves winter and provides a good show, rolling in fresh snow and playing in her pool with an inner tubt from an airplane tire Miss Gardella said. She is 19 and has been at the Brookfield Zoo west of Chicago since she was a pup. Olga is one of only five Atlantic walruses in captivity in the United States and a member of an endangered species. In return for the $15 donation parents get the usual benefits of the an iron-oparents' program patch, a decal a certificate plus an invitation to a special Olga celebration at the zoo Jan. 5 and 6, Joyce Gardella reported. Miss Gardella said the zoo's women's board had sponsored Olga for the past two years donating $7,000 to pay for the fish she ate in 1978 and $9,000 for this year's herring and mackerel. Now, she said the board has moved on to other projects, leaving Olga an "orphan." Also, her food bill has continued to climb and now stands at $12 000 or more for the coming year. To solve Olga's problems the zoo has decided to feature her in its animal adoption program offering sponsors a chance to "adopt" the walrus at $15 each.
