Hall, Orem, has been into ceramics for the past 10 years, and for about eight of these years she has been doing lace dolls. She takes the component parts of a figure arms, bodice, skirt, etc. and pours it in white porcelain. Then she takes the lace and cotton fabric (or anything of natural fiber) and dips these in colored porcelain. It has to be a natural fiber, she emphasizes, because if you use manmade fibers such as nylon it just curls up and drips with the heat of the kiln. She fires up the kiln to about 2300 degrees. The cloth fires out completely and all that is left is the hairline, pattern that the cotton lace has created. After the doll has been a fired it is painted, making a delicate display figurine.
