Show Sosk f It ougars By MARION DUNN Herald Sports Editor BYU's talented senior wide receiver Mike Chronister reached under his jersey and removed the pad that protects his injured ribs then smiled and said : "This is like old times. I think that we have it all together now and that we'll peak right at the end of the season." There were still better than two footminutes to play in the ball game in Cougar Stadium Saturday, but Chronister had been out of action for some time and along with the rest of the Cougar starters was enjoying the rest. The scoreboard showed BYU 44, UTEP 0 and that is the way the game ended. The win was BYU's third in WAC play and the Cougars were left as the conference's only undefeated team when Utah bowed to Wyoming, overall and have The Cougars are next week off. They will return to action Nov. 4 when Wyoming will come to Cougar Stadium for a big, big contest. The Cougars had a right to be happy and relaxed Saturday afternoon. They started slowly against UTEP and led only 0 at the end of the first quarter, at the half. Then they put and only 27 points on the board in the last two quarters to rout the Miners. UTEP coach Bill Michael kept his dressing room door shut and only stepped outside to give a few terse answers to questions many minutes after the game had ended. But one of the Miner assistant coaches said he believes the 44-beating was the worst the Miners have suffered in the last two years. And BYU-UTE- P 34-2- 2 3-- 17-- 0 0 that is saying something because the Miners have been beaten often and sometimes badly. North Texas State did it 49-- 0 and Arizona State 27-- earlier this fall. But the Miner aide said Satin day's whipping by BYU was the worst overall. The Cougars did dominate the game on both offense and defense. The Cougars rushed for 264 yards to 131 and passed for 181 to 76. The total vardage was 383 to 163 in BYU's favor and the Miners failed to get inside the BYU 15. The deepest penetration by the Miners was to the Cougars 19 following a long pass interference penalty and a short completed pass in the second quarter. That particular series ended with UTEP on the 37 where the Mines had to punt into the end zone. Sophomore quarterback Jim from Roy made his first start for the Cougars and he was impressive. He opened by keeping the ball on the ground and Bill Ring, Doug Williams. Casey Wingard, Clay Blackwell, Perry Bradford, Kyle Whittingham. McMahon, himself, Marc Wilson and Mark Flammef all rushed for plus yardage. McMahon had 63 yards rushing and 143 passing for 205 total yards. He passed for one touchdown, a pretty lob that Chronister made a spectacular grab of in the end zone. That was also Chronister's first touchdown reception of this year. Ring was the leading ball carrier with 83 yards in 15 carries and he had a gallop called back because of a motion penalty on the play. McMahon passed 6 yards to Chronister with 6:07 to play in the second period and Johnson converted. Williams ran 7 yards for a touchdown with 4:50 to go in the third quarter and Johnson added the PAT. Ring carried for a touchdown from the three and Johnson missed with 37 seconds remaining in the third period. Freshman linebacker Marv Allen intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 12: 15 still to play in the game and Johnson converted. Blackwell ripped up the middle for 6 yards and a touchdown with 6:42 to play in the game and Johnson's kick was good BYU coach LaVell Edwards said "This was one of our better performances of the year.
