An average honeybee colony has about 30,000 bees, but there may be up to 80,000 in one hive. There are three different kinds of bees in the hive: a queen, J NAME 1 thousands of worker bees. The colony is headed by the queen bee. She is a big female who lays all the eggs in the colony. She starts to lay them during the first warm days of spring and continues to lay them every day until the end of the summer. At first the number of eggs runs into dozens a day; then it becomes hundreds and keeps increasing as the season goes on. At the height of the season, the queen may lay as many as 1,000 to 2,000 eggs a day. Since she lives about 5 years, she may lay up to 1 million eggs in her lifetime. She is the only bee in the colony who can do this, so she is the mother of the entire colony. The drones are the males of the colony. They take no part in the work of the hive. They have to fertilize only one function the eggs of the queen. The worker bees are females smaller in size than the queen. They cannot lay eggs, but they do all the labor in the hive necessary for the maintenance and growth of the colony. (Win a "Tell Me Why" book, hundreds of questions answered. Illustrated.
