Show Thursday, March Garvey Faces Same Challenges YUMA, Ariz. (UPI) All his faced challenges and, while he admits it may be a form of pressure, he wouldn't have it any other way. "Life is a challenge so why shouldn't baseball be a challenge as well," he asks in reply to a question while watching his new San Diego Padres teammates go through their paces on the field. The temperature has climbed well over 80 degrees on the field. But in the dugout it's considerably cooler and Garvey is relaxing after a long turn in the batting cage and an even longer one fielding ground balls at first base, a position he has played with consistency if not brilliance the last 13 years for the Los Angeles Dodgers. For the first time since he has been in the Padres training camp, almost three weeks now after playing out the string with the Dodgers and signing a five-yea- r, multi-millio- n dollar contract with San Diego, Garvey acts like he belongs. "It's not that the Padres haven't made me welcome," he explains. "Not at all, because they have been warm and gracious. It's me. After being in an organization as I was with the Dodgers for 25 years, starting out as a batboy, it's not that easy to make the transition to self-impos- lPI im get 200 hits, drive in 100 runs and hit over 20 homers in 1983. Those have been his goals now for at least eight years and he's managed to reach them almost every time. The Padra feel if he reaches them this year they have a good chance to wind up in their n first play ever. "Obviously, we got him for his bat and glove," says Manager Dick Williams, "but he does so much more for a team, especially one like ours where we have a lot of younger players, and the most important thing he does is provide leadership. Players all need someone to look up to." With each passing year and new Garvey moves accomplishments up the ladder in the record books. Barring injury or rainouts, Garvey will reach one of his career goals 6 when the along about April Padres play the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Walton has been sidelined for the last five games with a sore right ankle that is caused by pressure on the joint, Clippers' general manager Paul Phipps said Tuesday. Garvey was the Mr. Nice Guy of the Dodgers and while some of his teammates didn't relate to him well, he's not having any problems with the Padres. John Montefusco, e a pitcher now turned serious, says of Garvey: "I wish I could be like him. He seems Page 7 9:30 to 9 WEEKDAYS championship teams in Los Angeles, brightens perceptibly. "I thrive on pressure," he says. "For the past eight years I set personal goals for myself and in my mind that's the toughest pressure of all, But it's what forces me to push myself every time I go out on the field. It's not pressure in some ways so much as it is a challenge. "Here with San Diego the challenge for me is to push the team to a world championship. That may be the ultimate challenge because it will involve every one of my human qualities to accomplish. It's a commitment I've made for the next five years."
