(UPI) Ryan doesn't miss a trick. He was working on his breaking ball (he doesn't have to bother about his fast one) over on the side of the Houston Astros clubhouse where they have a couple of extra pitching mourds when he happened to notice Phil Garner giving an interview to a newsman. "Hey, Phil, he yelled over. "Tell him how many home runs you hit. Tell him how you got all those RBIs too." Ryan laughed. So did Garner. "Why is he getting on you?" the writer asked the Astros' clutch-hittin- g little infielder. Garner blushed. He knew the reason and didn't want to say. Finally, he did. "It has to do with the first day we were in camp," he revealed. "Bob Lillis, our manager, wanted to make sure we all got to know each other. He told each one of us, 'I want you to introduce yourself, tell where you live, and say a little ' something about yourself. " moment. He a Garner paused laughed some more and then continued. "When I got up, I said, 'I'm Phil Garner, I live in Houston and I led the team in home runs last year.' They've all been kidding me since. I may never lead the club in home runs again, so I have to get a lot of mileage out of it. I'm not a real home run hitter, you know. You're not looking at a Mike Schmidt, - King Kong Kingman, Alan Ashby do," says the or Steve Garvey. They can miss the ball, not get all of it, I mean, and still jerk it out of the park. They don't have to hit it on the screws. I do. I have to make perfect contact. I know that. But I'm not here to hit home runs." Garner doesn't really have to hit home runs to help the Astros. Last year, he hit 13, more than he hit in any of the previous four years, and his 83 RBI made him high man in both departments for the Astros, but they don't actually t i It Kristyn Thompson Genie Lamb Astros' Garner Won't Live Down His Team Home Run Leadership i. 4 ' mom I . ilulfilil'.lH VoVo Cot 'EMI native Tennesseean who came to the Astros from the Pirates two years ago. "Billy Doran stepped right in and did the job at second last year and Dickie Thon is going to be the shortstop for a long time. If it'll make us a stronger club with me playing third, then I'm all for it. We're rebuilding, starting all over again. Last year's team was the first one I've been on where we were out of the pennant race by August. It was an empty feeling. I. don't want that to happen to us again this year." Garner is best remembered for the great World Series he had in look to him for power. What they do look to him for is the type of spark and electricity Pete Rose generates on whatever club he's with, that little extra Garner always seems to provide and those important intangibles that sometimes transform mediocre players into great ones. That Phil Garner is is to say he'll give himself up any time to help the ballclub and the woods aren't exactly full of those kind of players.
