Monthly computer printouts can tell a farmer among other critical data when to dry a cow, cull her, when she should be bred, what bull to use and how the cow compares in the herd. For farmers who do not want to wait for the monthly report, the Provo DHI has provided the terminal for immediate information. Twenty-fiv- e dairies, all in the western states, are now using this service. In a "Science Digest" article, it was reported that the California Diamond S. Ranch saves about 10 cents a day per cow in feeding costs using the farm computer that is tied into the Provo DHI center. The savings for Diamond S add up to $1500 per month. Provo's DHI's President is Bliss Crandall. who is credited with first entering dairy reports on mechnical data processing equipment when he was a statistician working with Extension Agent Lyman Rich at Utah State University in 1952. Previously, dairy reports were calculated by hand. Two years after Crandall mechanized the dairy information, he quit the university to start his own computing business in the basement of his home because there wasn't enough machine time for dairy reports at the school. "I left the university with the administration's blessing," said Crandall. "The university did not want to become involved commercially at that tuna slpi fZmm 0' i J 3 la been a result of the intense selection pressure that has been placed on the male side of the pedigree."
