"Second, I feel that elected officials should be servants of all the people, that doors to the county commission office should be open to all the people and those people feel assured that they are welcome to come in with their problems and ideas," he indicated. "Third, I feel that we should always think and talk highly of our County and point out to other people the advantages we enjoy living here; what a wonderful place to retire or raise our families." Elden Sherwood Mr. Sherwood's experience has been with law enforcement, particularly with the Utah Highway Patrol for 28 Provo Kindergarten Opening Wednesday Provo school officials of kindergarten children that on or before Sept. 30. Wing at its August meeting calling for the change, which will bring the district more in line with the other two school districts in the county. Some confusion resulted from a Herald story concerning a board decision to change the day on which children must be five in order to start kindergarten, according to Boyd McAffee, director education. This year, children may start kindergarten if their Ute Stampede Association. His church affiliations have been with Boy Scout work over a period of years. and with church building and planning programs. Mr. Sherwood said, "I have the time to devote to the study of, and to take care of important duties of County Commissioner. I feel that my years of serving the people of Juab County, and observing county needs, have made me aware of a number of vital county problems that need considerable time and study from whoever is elected to this position, such as roads, senior citizens, water conservation, public buildings, employee benefits and solid waste disposal. My knowledge of these problems qualifies me for this position. "If elected I will apply my time and myself to this office with al the diligence and wisdom that I possess. I am not obligated to any person, persons or groups in any way," he stated. Sheriff Contest The second primary contest Juab County democrats will be deciding is between A. Dwane Sperry and Robert L. Painer for Sheriff. Sheriff Sperry has held this office for nine years and at the present time is also chairman of the Law Planning Council for the six Counties in Region Five" and is for the Utah State Sheriffs Associasecretary-treasure- r tion. He recently said "I don't think there has ever been a time in the history of our county when law enforcement and experience has been more vital to the people of this county with the added responsibility of the new Regional Detention Center that demands more understanding of the rehabilitation programs to help these people get back into society. I feel that as sheriff, I have maintained this to the highest degree. I am also proud of the work done in the alcohol and narcotics program wherein many families have greatly benefited." Mr. Robert L. Painter graduated from Juab High School and was later employed by Gates Rubber Co. for several years before going into law enforcement work. He attended the Utah Police Academy at Westminster College in Salt Lake in 1973 and then a police science class at Snow College which he is continuing at the present time. He has been employed on the Nephi City Police Force since September, 1973 and is anxious to devote his time to law enforcement. Stating his beliefs, he said, "Major emphasis should be placed on better communications with all law - enforcement agencies. Only through combined efforts can the taxpayers of Juab County get their monies worth. "A cut in the budget can be accomplished by trimming expense areas such as traveling and personal items. "It is important to retain all present personnel and to offer them more schooling in different aspects of law enforcement and keep the deputies for the good of the people of Juab County." CECIL J. PAINTER SPERRY Juab County Democrats Facing Primary Contests in September By SADIE GREENHALGH NEPHI Residents of Juab County will make a selection of candidates for two offices, both on the democrat ticket, in the Primary Election Sept. 10. Elden C. Sherwood and Clinn A. Morgan are contending for the 4 year Commission Post. A race for Juab County Sheriff will be between incumbent A. Dwane Sperry and Robert L. Painter, a member of Nephi City Police force. Both Mr. Morgan and Mr. Sherwood have been active in civic and church affairs for more than 25 years. They were both born and raised in Levan. However, Mr. Sherwood has resided in Nephi the largest portion of his life. Mr. Morgan's activities have been with the Levan Town Board, Levan Irrigation Company, Juab District School Board for more than 20 years.
