But I believe our confidence must be matched with the ability to accept success and failure with grace and humor. U.S. SKI TEAM: Do you remember the first time you felt like a champion? AM: I am sure there are many times I felt like a champion, although I can’t think of the first. Every time I felt like a champion, the feeling was followed by the question ‘what’s next?’ There is always a bigger goal. I think it’s important to relish in that feeling, and enjoy that moment, but not get comfortable with it. U.S. SKI TEAM: What is the biggest piece of advice you have for young athletes who want to be sitting where you are today? AM: Always talk to the per- son sitting next to you on the chairlift. Everyone has a different path to success, but what everyone will tell you at the end of their careers is that it’s the people and relationships that made it all worth it. The person sitting next to you could be your new best friend, a new fan or supporter, or maybe just a little kid that reminds you of how fun skiing is. Some parting words of gratitude from Anna: “As I step away from this career I feel mostly gratitude. There are so many moments of encouragement that I recall. So many people have made an effort to support me and believe in me. All I can say is THANK YOU to everyone who met me along this journey!” TANZI PROPST/PARK RECORD The Park City Water Polo team seniors pose for a photo with Manny the Miner poolside after receiving their senior gifts and recognition between the boys and girls games against Kearns at the Park City Aquatic Center Wednesday evening. This year, the goal was to top Kearns, which they’ve done, but none of that would’ve been possible without the seniors. “We’re proud of how far that they’ve come,” Whipple said. “It’s a great group of kids.” With the end of Wednesday’s games, the Park City teams now look forward to the state tournament, which will take place next weekend at Southern Utah University. One team they won’t see in the state tournament is Kearns, who competes at the 4A level. But instead, Park City will have to go up against Southern Utah, a combination team of the five high schools down in St. George. The fact that Southern Utah will be competing right in its backyard is a strike against the Miners, but they still feel they’re the favorite. “I think that both the girls’ and boys’ teams are going to go in as the No. 1 ranked team in 3A,” Whipple said. “I think we’re the odds-on favorite to win both the boys’ and girls’ 3A state championship.” The Utah High School Water Polo Association State Water Polo Tournament will take place from May18-20 at Southern Utah University.
