Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, May 13-16, 2017 A-5 The Park Record COUNTY SEAT COUNTY EDITOR: ANGELIQUE MCNAUGHTON 649-9014 EXT. 112 | Countynews@parkrecord.com Democratic Party solicits County Attorney candidates One week left to apply for rest of Hilder’s term By MONIKA GUENDNER The Park Record After the unexpected death of Summit County Attorney Robert Hilder last month, the Summit County Democratic Party has begun to look for a candidate to fill the unexpired portion of his term. The process to choose his successor will follow the one Hilder himself went through to become the Democratic nominee for the position in 2014. To be considered a candidate, applicants must be citizens of the United States, attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of Utah, registered voters in Summit County, and live in Summit County or be willing to become a resident of Summit County within 30 days of appointment. “I think anyone who works in that office will have a large group of people looking up to them for leadership, and among their skills should be management, advisory, research, and communication skills,” Democratic Party Chair Cheryl Baker said. In addition to submitting a resume, applicants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire asking them more about their background. The County Attorney is responsible for managing four divisions in the Summit County Attorney’s Office: the Civil Division, the Criminal Division, the Children’s Justice Center, and the Victims Assistance Program. “The areas they’ll cover in this position is quite a mix, and they’ll touch them all over the 18 months they’ll be in the office,” Baker said. Non-Democrats can apply as well. “Although the Democratic Central Committee will choose the nominees, there’s nothing in the bylaws that states they have to be a Democrat,” Baker said. As of Thursday evening, Baker said she had received a handful of inquiries, but no formal applications. The deadline to submit an application is Saturday, May 20. The 30 days to present nominees to the Summit County Council ends May 25. At that time, the Democratic Party Central Committee will meet and select up to three nominees. The Council then has 15 days to appoint a new County Attorney. If they fail to, the governor can appoint someone. Dave Thomas, Summit County’s chief civil deputy attorney, has been appointed as acting county attorney since Hilder took a leave of absence to receive treatment for esophageal cancer.
