Show Oil TOWNS Liahona Academy gets Laura Giles DAILY HERALD Applause erupted in the Fleas-an- t Grove City Council room Tuesday alter the council unanimously approved the final site plan for the Liahona Academy. "We have been waiting to start construction for one and a half years," said school administrator Colleen DeGraff. Liahona Academy is a private junior high and high school that teaches an IDS curriculum. It plans to move into its new building by August or September. The original site plan for the building was in the only area in the city zoned for sexually oriented businesses. Mayor Mike Daniels helped facilitate a plan between school owners and Trophy Homes to exchange the two acres donated to the school by parents for three acres owned by Trophy Homes. Then the school ran into faith-base- d annexation problems. When Pleasant Grove began the annexation process for 32 acres that includes the area for the school, American Fork City protested because of concerns about parks, transportation, density, drainage and trails. That has since been resolved. "It's been like a bouncing ball, and the ball is the school" said Councilman Lee Jensen, referring to all of the hurdles experienced by the academy while trying to SECTION THURSDAY. ' -- lineup Brooke Barker DAILY Getting Ready for Spring It's official Timpview High will be on a balanced block schedule for the 2007-0school year. "The faculty was supportive of the decision," said George Bayles, the school's principal. He announced his intentions for the schedule change during Wednesday morning's faculty meeting. On a balanced block schedule, students will attend eight periods, instead of the seven they currently do, making it easier for them to meet the state requirements for graduation. Rather than attending all of their classes in one day, students will have alternating days Tuesday through Friday. On Mondays, they will attend all eight classes. Provo City School District gave principals the decision to choose their school's schedule, something d called a decision." According to Bayles, members of the school's community council . had been involved in researching options. They came to support him in his presentation to the faculty. "They have endorsed it, so I guess we're ready to move on," Bayles said. At this point, he said he doesn't know how many teachers Timpview will need for next year, and he expects there will be some need in math and science. "We just sent out the letters of intent yesterday to see who would be sticking around for next year," Bayles said. One of the other benefits of a balanced block schedule, according to Bayles, includes additional class time for teachers to help students master the curriculum. It also will make the transition to college easier for students and 8 ,4 V HERALD V.; v0'i four-perio- d ' "site-base- ASHLEY FRANSCELi Daily Herald 4T've worked on this orchard all my life," said John Crandall as he trimmed one of his pear trees 1 Wednesday in Orem. The church owns BYU. "Some people apparently interpreted that it might be the church making a statement," Engebretsen said. "It's not, it's completely independent." Engebretsen is an assistant dean in BYUs Marriott School of Management and has been in Utah for two years. He said his intention with the site is to provide accurate information about "things written by prophets of the church and why polygamy is not practiced" today. Jim Engebretsen, an assistant dean at the Provo school, relaunched his page less than 24 hours after BYU officials shut it down for violating university policy. Broadus was arrested at 5 a.m. on Jaa 8. He's charged with DUI, not having a driver's license, speeding and having illegally tinted windows. All of the charges are misdemeanors. A Utah Highway Patrol report stated that Broadus had a "strong smell of alcohol" when he was pulled over. He was booked into Utah County Jail at 6 a.m. and released a few of hours later after posting $1,675 bail. Though Broadus refused to take a breathalyzer test, he is still charged with DUI because there was enough evidence from sobriety tests. "The evidence he gained on the side of that road is all that he needs to continue through and charge him with this," said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Preston Raban. "The intoxilizer is just supportive evidence." Broadus was suspended from the basketball team on Jaa 9, with the BYU basketball coach calling the situation "not in line" with the school's standards. Broadus was arrested just 12 hours after scoring a season- - high 19 points in the Mountain West Conference opener against San Diego State. He was averaging 6.1 points per game until the suspension. BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Broadus is still taking classes. There is an Honor Code investigation. Backlund told Broadus not to operate a vehicle unless he has a valid driver's license. Backlund offered to drop the tinted window charge, if Broadus had fixed the car, but Broadus didn't know because it wasn't his car. "I wouldn't know, I haven't talked to that girl since the night it happened," he said. Broadus will appear in court again on Feb. 27 to enter a plea.
