The Riverite squad will try again Friday, April 1, to get the spring sport in gear when they travel to Bonneville High in Ogden for a contest. The Bears did manage to get themselves a practice game victory over Grants-vill- e last week during the lull between the storms. Grantsville, you say? That's right. The Bears posted a 4 decision over the school from Tooele County which fielded the best baseball team in the state last year. But the boys from Grantsville were short on pitching when they went up against the Bears and almost literally handed the victory to them. g In the game Grantsville pitchers gave up 11 walks to the Bears. Bear River pitchers Mark Williams and Clayton Austin combined to shut out the Grantsville nine in every inning but the third when they scored all their runs. Austin, in fact, came on in relief and pitched near perfect ball for the final three innings, according to Coach Dick Green. "Both pitchers did well," he added. "Mark was sailing along until the final inning." Substitute, Joel Ramsdell, a sophomore, showed up as a pleasant surprise with a bat in his hands. Ramsdell went 2 for 2 in the game. Green was also pleased with the Bear River defensive effort. 6-- 2-- if Well E)o "We never made a defensive lapse. But, he added, "They didn't hit the ball enough to test us." Bear River shortstop, Nolan Hess, led off the Bear's first inning with a walk to start the procession. Four walks later and two strike A outs, the Bears led third strike out ended the inning. The Bears made it 0 in the second on a triple by Hess who then scored on a throwing error when the ball was thrown into third. Grantsville broke loose in the fourth. After Williams posted two strikeouts in the inning, he gave up two bases on balls, a single and a round tripper to let four Grantsville players cross the plate. The Bears added two more, of their own to the score in the bottom of the inning with two walks and bunt single by Gene Billings, followed by two more walks. A final insurance run was added in the bottom of the sixth by the Bears. Ramsdell singled, stole second and scored on an error.
