Harper, a physician's assistant, will join his staff in March 1977. Under Dr. Johnson's direct orders and supervision, Medex Harper will take patient histories, perform physical examinations, suture minor lacerations, make laboratory tests, and complete many other medical tasks for which she has been trained. Medex Harper has just completed the first phase of training with the Utah MEDEX Project at the University library," she said. Grownups, especially, can go to the bookmobile and pick up "new books" which "these two cities just don't have the money to buy..." The $125 from the county once went quite a ways towards new books, she said. "I can bring those books home now under one arm." The Board of Education also used to furnish some money. But when the school district installed libraries of their own that was stopped. Now "we don't get a dime," Mrs. Huish said. In fiscal 1976 the library circulated 1,357 books. Mrs. Huish has a budget of . of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. She is one of 16 members of the seventh class the project has trained to assist busy physicians in the intermountain area. Dr. Johnson, who is a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Utah College of Medicine's Department of Family and Community Medicine, will serve as Medex ; Harper's "preceptor" or teacher for the second phase of her training. During the next seven months, Medex Harper will receive practical training and instruction. After her training is complete, 5 and she has been certified by the Utah MEDEX Project, Medex Harper will continue to assist Dr. Johnson in providing health care to his patients. Like all Medex, Mrs. Harper had extensive previous medical training and experience before she was accepted for the program. Before her selection, from several hundred applicants, Medex Harper had served as a medical assistant in Dr. Johnson's office from 1971 75. In 1974 she graduated with honors earning RN and AD degrees in nursing through Weber State Coll- - r Heen Harper ege's extension program at Utah State University. Shortly thereafter, she became head nurse at Bear River Valley Hospital in Tremon- -- ton. Born in Tremonton, she graduated from Bear River High School in 1962. She and r Students still use the library to study and to prepare reports seeking out magazines and encyclopedias not conveniently available from the bookmobile. But even that has dropped off. Chase offered. Buttars said bookmobiles are operated in 26 ortne state s counties. Last year a total of 1.8 million books were circulated state wide. The bookmobile which operates in her husband, Carl, have two daughters, Michelle, 14 and Denise, 12, and two sons, Marcellus, 11 and Nicholas, 9. Mr. Harper is a microwave and radio technician for Continental Telephone Company and an active leader in scouting. The Harpers enjoy outdoor recreation and share a special interest in music and square dancing. The Utah MEDEX Project, sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Utah State Medical Association, was established at the University of Utah Medical Center in June 1971. It is a part of a nationwide network of MEDEX projects currently located in Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Washington, D. C; Charleston, South Carolina; Hershey, Pennsylvania and Honolulu, Hawaii. r accounted for 8,765 books circulated. A stop at Lucin accounted for 531 books circulated as well. On a rough average the bookmobile servicing the northern part of the county is responsible for 6,875 books per month being circulated to readers. "I think our own kids go to the city too and we appreciate that," library added. he Another teacher pointed out that a lot of the kids at the school can't use the city library because they live out of town and are bussed to school. Besides bringing the books right to your doorstep in some cases.the bookmobile program has a number of other advantages over small town city Bookmobile useage, understand- WILL BE The biggest one is money. A bookmobile costs $35,152 to operate. Box Elder county gets 1.6 bookmobiles and furnishes a total of $30,943 or 55 percent of the total cost of operation in the county. In addition, the bookmobiles have the resources of the state library commission on which to draw for books. Mrs. VanSweden, on the other hand, operated the Schuman library last year on $4,700 provided by a one mill levy. She says the county provides $125 to buy books. That budget also pays her part-tim- e salary, utilities, and other expenses. A total of 4,001 books were circulated in the northern part of the county during July 1976 compared to a high of 8,812 books in March. Although popular with the public in general, the bookmobiles aren't the favorite topic of some city librarians. Mrs. Jessie VanSweden, librarian at the Tremonton's Schuman library, has says the bookmobile "definitely its place." She says the service was originally established to serve "people in the outlying districts." "It's a shame it can come and park right at the schools one day a week," she added. She cites figures of her own to show the effect the bookmobiles have had on the city library's circulation in the three or four years since they began the practice of stopping at the schools. "When I first started to be a Isub's I in nearly every night." she observed. Principal Josh Hawks ot North Park Elementary where student usage of the bookmobile is heavy likes it. "It gives the kids a greater variety." he said. "Kids seem toTDte fb geTbooks off the bookmobile when maybe they won't get them out of the library." The principal said the bookmobile offers a greater variety than the school's own library. "If they'll read, I don't care where they get books," he offered.
