Show Page 18, THE LEADER-GARLAN- TIMES, December D 9, 1976 s Are Getting Older Res For a number of years after World to 1960, residents of Box Elder County were getting younger and younger. Collectively, that is. Not individually. Year by year, the median age of the local population, which is the level at which there are as many persons above that age as below it, had been dropping in line with the changes that were taking place elsewhere. It was due to the high birth rate experienced after the war. The sharp increase in the number of children had the effect of lowering the overall age present time. Elsewhere in the United States, the median is now 28.8 years and, in the state of Utah, 23.6. Nationally, the sudden end to the growing-younge- r process is tied up with the drop in the birth rate. The figures show that women in their 20's are having fewer children than previous generations of women had at their age. According to a government survey, this trend is likely to continue for some time. The average wife, it shows, intends to have 2.17 children in her lifetime, down from 2.4 in 1970. level. ! The median started moving upward despite the fact that, throughout the country as a whole, the age level continued to drop, falling from 29.4 years in 1960 to 27.9 in 1970. Since then, however, there has been a reversal in the national trend. The age level has been rising in most areas. Box Elder county saw its median age go from 21.7 years in 1960, as determined by the census taken at that time, to 22.7 years in 1970. The extent to which this relates on the number of children in the population under the age of five per 1,000 women of childbearing age. This is called the "fertility ratio." In 1960, Box Elder county's fertility ratio was given as 709. It is currently estimated at 467. The average, nationally, is approximately 337 at present and, in Utah, 417. An efficient use of space, inside and out. And these cars are actually fun to drive. Moreover, these particular Buicks are specially equipped to handle the unique conditions of driving. They contain engines and drive trains that have been specifically engineered for areas above 4,000 feet. The point of all this was to help control areas exhaust emissions in while retaining the impressive performance characteristics of the car. Buick engines, for example, are equipped with leaner carburetor calibration than those in engines. This allows the engine to adjust its performance to the thinner atmospheric conditions. There is also an reactor system that aids in emission control, by providing additional air to the engine. And on most models, there's a higher axle ratio for good acceleration and pulling power in mountain driving. There's something interesting about this new maneuverability.
