Show THE Burt Says Entertainment Against j Causeway Opening Opening a section of the Great Salt Lake causeway to equalize the level of water in the north and south would only serve to ruin the lake mineral resources, according to County Commissioner Ted Burt, while lowering the water threatening industry on the south shore only about two inches. Burt, who represents the county on the Great Salt Lake Commission, said a proposal to cut a opening in the causeway is the last priority of three courses of action to help solve g the problem. First priority, Burt said, is a series of dikes which would be built on the north end on the lake's contour from the bird refuge to Promontory to encourage evaporation. Recommendations to that effect will be sent to the state legislature when it convenes in 1977, Burt pointed out. The second priority plan is the expensive process of pumping water out of the lake into the desert to the west. Burt said the Air Force has opposed that plan, saying it would damage their bombing run west of the lake, including some $4 million worth of camera equipment used to monitor the range. Burt said the commission has been ordered by the Governor to steer clear of any measures which would involve water rights such as upsteam storage. Burt said samples of water taken from lower reaches of the lake where salinity is 25 percent or better, actually stink. Burt said the mistake proponents of opening the causeway make is in believing that by allowing water from the north arm to mix more freely with the south, the problem will cure itself. Instead of curing, such an action would eventually harm the whole lake, Burt said, the commission's experts feel. When he votes against opening the causeway in commission meetings, supporters accuse him of "being greedy." Burt admitted that perhaps he is. If conditions in the north arm-locain Box Elder County-are- n't ruined by opening the causeway, Burt said he sees the possibility of future industrial To I''. 4 passage of a new Bear River Compact currently being considered. The commissioner said one reason the proposal to open the causeway has surfaced is because the north end of the lake is becoming increasingly salty, while the south end is getting fresher. The mineral content near the bottom of the lake in the south is becoming Mi-Stepp- ers Olil '10: bw iyfS 176. Page .
