Show I f THE 1, L- lll4 to ft!, Coach Paul Jeppesen will test the water Friday and Saturday as his 1976 - 77 basketball squad opens the preseason with road contests against Tooele and West, respectively. Both games get under way at 7:30 p.m. The two contests will give Jeppesen a chance to begin evaluating under game conditions what he admits is largely an "unknown quan- "We've really worked hard and will continue to work hard on that. Last year's (varsity), team won some games at the foul line." That's an understatement for any fan who remembers how center, Dale Thompson, canned two free throws against Logan in their den to win that one. Depth is another problem. "I don't think we have a lot of depth," Jeppesen admitted. A lack of experience is a primary reason. "We've Brad-sha- senior. They could be good "if the forwards do the job." He describes them as an "excellent ball handling team" giving much of the credit to Hess, the player on the team who saw the most varsity action last year. Jeppesen rates Hess as a better ball handler than anyone who played regularly last year. "I don't think we have to worry about the press because of Nolan," the probably got one replacement at each spot who could do a job now," the coach claimed. Jeppesen plans to use the preseason as a training ground for some of those substitutes, even though he enjoyed the events, their favorite was the 26 mile run from Promontory to Brigham. Some of his kids haven't had any experience and "we want to give them some in preseason." Perhaps one indication of the team's depth problem is that Jeppesen has included two sophomores on the varsity squad, Mike Giles and Blake Sandall. "They won't be playing a lot of varsity," Jeppesen admits, but they'll get a lot of junior varsity experience. 7 "They've got potential, basketball squad has a healthy crop of seniors Norr.
