The freeway would not affect them. If Lamb's service has just recently spent $75,000 as the writer indicates, then they find themselves in the same situation as the Texaco station. They were just not paying attention to what was going on. ces If the new Belmont Springs is as fabulous as the letter states, I'm sure any tourist needing a hot mineral bath can find his way over there from the West side. Now I will get down to the crux of "Concerned Citizen's" letter and this is my answer to him. It says right there in bold print that Ross Plant promised them that the freeway would come up the center of the valley. What a farce and a heartbreak! What about all the meetings and hearings at the high school in the County Commissioner's Chambers, and even the Governor's tour of the proposed routes! Where did Ross Plant get the authority to promise them that? How could one man get so powerful as to go against the wishes and clear thinking of all the organizations and public officials even the Governor? The purpose of the Envir- r ! 2. "Concerned Citizen" said in his letter that because of this commitment from Ross Plant, he just sat and laughed at the proposed West route. If he had, instead, attended the meetings and hearings held over an eighteen year period, he would have found this was not a laughing matter. Could Mr. Citizen be foolish enough to believe that even after his death, Mr. Plant had enough influence to get the for a center route? Could he believe this secret agreement with Mr. Ross Plant was binding enough to make fools of all the rest of us? This in turn prevents people like Ross Plant from making private treaties. I am glad to see "Concerned Citizen" admit in the newspaper that Mr. Plant had made him a promise. But does he for one minute think that we would give up the choice center ground of this valley because Ross Plant made a private promise? That the Garland Factory may close, is foremost on everyone's mind who works there - also the farmers. If we were to take a thousand acres out of production in Elwood and East Tremonton, this could very well close it. I wonder how many of those 900 families have a husband or wife son, or daughter working at the sugar factory or who are growing sugar beets. Someone has been around in the last few weeks and has told these 900 families that they need a road desperately - that highway 191 will no longer serve their needs. How ridiculous! The Beet Growers Association and the Utah Idaho Sugar Company endorsed the West Alternate. If the freeway were being built to accommodate the Cache Valley people who work at Thiokol, it should have run East to West. Then our own valley residents who work over there and students who attend U.S.U. could use it too. West or Center, would not make one bit of difference to them, except that those who now work at the Sugar Factory might well not have a job. The Idaho Road Commission moved their freeway out of the Malad Valley onto the hillside. "Concerned Citizen" would have us believe that the Malad people wanted to save their valley, but to hell with ours! His remarks are a slap in the face to the Malad. of merchants Doesn't he think that they prefer to have their people shop at home? Could they make it on what business they would get from each other? I fail to see how the freeway would affect Malad people at all. What makes "Concerned Citizen" think that a handful of people were able to change things? Doesn't he know that nearly every organization in the county and on a state level as well opposed the center route? The new Texaco station was built at the height of the m h zC 2y -' Vss.
