There is a misunderstanding, apparently, with some of the people within the county regarding my request for a radar unit to be purchased by the county! This is a normal practice by the counties and the monies generated from this goes into the towns and the county's general fund. The sheriff's department would maintain accountability as the equipment belongs to the county. Macfarlands point out the main objective of the sheriff's department is to investigate Jburglaries, etc, and 'I agreiS; We have organized our department to emphasize the efforts in the criminal area. The sworn oath as sheriff, and that of the deputies, is to uphold all of the laws of the county and state, which would include traffic. But I disagree that we are working against the Utah Highway Patrol, even though we do work the same geographical areas with different priorities (complimentary wherever necessary) but in harmony. With the help of the county commissioners, I have tried to equip the men with the proper equipment and cars in an effort to seek their maximum performance.
