Commodities Directorate d wered support systems mechanics in the ICBM Product Directorate, observed that cushions on the CNU 373 shipping and storage containers were being damaged during maintenance. The technical instructions directed that damaged cushions be replaced. Church and Dunn developed a method of repairing the cushions which has. saved the Air Force $18,576 in replacement costs. The two suggesters will share an award of $1,257. Craig A. Hendrickson, aircraft sheetmetal mechanic in the Aircraft Directorate, won a substantial award of $1,175 when he suggested that an ongoing problem with a cable on the Navy 4 nose cone door be modified because the cable, which slides through an eye bolt when the door opens and closes, kinks, frays and eventually breaks. Hendrickson proposed a modification to the cable which stops the friction. In turn, this completely eliminates the binding, kinking and breakage of the cable. The suggested modification has significantly saved the Air Force in replacement costs. Other suggestion awards are as follows: Silo-Base- One group of suggesters noted that during plastic media was causing damage to aircraft components that were supposed to be covered by applying tape over critical areas and sealing the edges with hot glue. Together, the group designed protective plastic covers and plugs that effectively shielded the critical areas on the 6 and protecting the components from beadblast damage. The Air Force realized a substantial savings and the following people will share an award of $3,318: James R. Rasmussen, Barry E. Engstrum, Paul V. Erickson, Sherry Jones, aircraft workers; and Darlene E. Lake, Richard S. Griffin and Robert J. Tolton, plastic workers, in the Aircraft Directorate. Breck S. Baker and William H. Archer, pneu-drauli- c mechanics in the Commodities Directorate, discovered that there was no method to determine if a sensor on the C-- 5 A emergency lock cylinder assembly was serviceable or not, so the technical orders directed that the sensor be replaced 100 percent of the time. Baker and Archer suggested a method of testing and repairing the sensor instead of always replacing it. The new procedures were approved and added to the technical instructions. As a result of their suggestion, the Air Force has realized a significant savings in replacement costs, and the two mechanics will share an award of $1,326. Ronald L. Norton, service contract specialist for the 649th Civil Engineering Squadron, suggested that a contract between Hill and a company who maintains security and fire alarms systems be canceled when the contract came up for renewal. He suggested that maintenance of the system be assigned to Hill personnel, resulting in tangible savings to the Air Force of $15,785.
